Blitz for Mia & The Bad Boy (Backstage Pass #2) by Lisa Burstein

Mia and the Bad Boy (Backstage Pass #2)
Release Date: 05/19/15
Entangled Crush
Summary from Goodreads:
This good girl’s about to meet her match…Ryder Brooks is living the dream—he’s famous, loved by millions of girls, and miserable. All he really wants is to write his own music, not Seconds to Juliet’s sugary sweet pop. In order to do that, though, the “bad boy” of the band will have to play by the rules. And that includes behaving with his new—and super cute—über-good-girl tutor.

Mia Reyes is in fangirl heaven. Tutoring her favorite member of her favorite band? It’s a dream come true…until it turns into a complete nightmare. Ryder is nothing like she thought. He’s crude, arrogant, and pretty much a total jerk. And the worst part? She’s roped into pretending to be his girlfriend so that no one finds out he’s being tutored. Fake kisses, plenty of PDA, and even sharing his hotel room…

But sometimes even the baddest of bad boys needs a little redemption.

EXCERPT:

“Great show,” she said, needing to say something. She clasped her hands in her lap.

“The fans seemed to like it,” Ryder said, standing just beyond the doorway. “You didn’t have to wait up for me.”

“I kind of did,” Mia said, indicating the couch. If she set up the bed, that meant she was okay with this arrangement, and while her body definitely was, it was hard to get her mind to catch up.

Never mind catching up. Before Mia could even take another breath, Ryder was peeling off his shirt like Mia wasn’t even there, or maybe he’d done that because she was.

“Sorry, I can’t wait to get out of my clothes as soon as the show is over.”

They both looked at his belt buckle.

Ryder laughed. “I’ll change in the bathroom per your rule,” he said.

She understood with more and more certainty that she was going to share a bed with Ryder Brooks.

Would he try to kiss her? Would he try more? Would she be able to deal with it if he did? What if he didn’t? The questions swirled around Mia’s brain like fireflies.

“We don’t have to go to sleep right away,” Ryder said, maybe sensing her fear.

“I don’t know if I’m going to be able to sleep at all,” she admitted.

“You don’t have to be scared,” Ryder said, the muscles in his arms bulging as he pushed his hair back. She stared at the tribal tattoo wrapped around one bicep, black as the darkest reaches of outer space.

Mia’s mouth started to water and she realized she wasn’t only scared, she was hungry. She wanted to touch Ryder’s tattoo, taste the water and sweat on his skin. Regrettably, the hunger scared her, too. Mia spit-laughed to cover it up. “You think I’m scared of you? No way.”

“Then I guess I’ll change my pants right here,” Ryder replied, clearly calling her bluff. He moved his fingers to his belt buckle, and her heart seemed to fly up and beat from behind her eyes. He was taking her right to the edge.

Mia looked down. She needed to tell him the truth. “Considering what I admitted last night, it shouldn’t surprise you that I’ve never shared a bed with a boy before. I know this is an every-night thing for you, but it’s not for me.”

Ryder’s mouth widened into a grin that made Mia crave this being an every-night thing for her.

“Haven’t you ever done something your mother wouldn’t approve of?” he asked, stepping closer to her.

“Sure,” she said, not understanding how talking about her mother was supposed to make her feel any calmer about sharing a bed with Ryder.

“So tell me, then.” He stood over her, his stomach at eye level.

She was staring at Ryder Brooks’s belly button, his chiseled abs. How had she not died yet?

Mia searched her brain. Was it really that her mom would freak out if she knew she was sharing a bed with Ryder, or if she knew Mia’s feelings for him would probably only increase once she did?

“Maybe I should guess,” Ryder said, the muscles of his stomach moving up and down as he spoke. “You rode a mechanical bull once, or tied a cherry stem with your tongue.”

Mia knew he was being a smart-ass, but she could be a smart-ass, too.

She looked up at him, shirtless, beautiful, wet Ryder Brooks, and said something that no girl in her right mind would ever say. “And then what? Will you reciprocate by telling me about this one time at band camp?”

Ryder burst out laughing. “I got kicked out of band camp.” He headed toward the bathroom. “Don’t worry,” he said, peeking out from behind the door before he closed it. “I’ll put a shirt on.”

A thought her mother definitely wouldn’t approve of clouded her vision, but she couldn’t bring herself to say the words out loud. I don’t want you to.

About the Author
Lisa Burstein is a tea seller by day and a writer by night. She received her MFA in Creative Writing from the Inland Northwest Center for Writers at Eastern Washington University and is glad to finally have it be worth more than the paper it was printed on. She wrote her first story when she was in second grade. It was a Thanksgiving tale from the point of view of the turkey from freezer to oven to plate. It was scandalous.

MY REVIEW

Chris has had the big O, just never from anyone else besides herself. Despite multiple attempts, no guy has managed to please her. After Allie, her best friend jokingly posts a Craigslist ad look for a talented man to liberate Chris that goes viral, Chris is swept away in a MTV offer to make a reality show about The Orgasm Virgin. From there she meets eleven men and four women willing to try to rock her world the way no one before them has. She also meets Scott, the completely hot (and completely off limits) production assistant. With each day that passes forcing Chris to consider these people and the reality of getting busy with one of them (and NOT Scott), the more she wonders if signing up for a reality show was really her best idea. Will she finally find the big O with some else, or will she head back home to her library just as unsatisfied as she arrived?

I loved Chris almost immediately. She’s somewhat deprived, spending her days in a library rather than carousing with the “normal” people and mostly she likes it that way. But there are moments when hearing about Allie’s sexscapades make Chris incredibly jealous and that’s something I can always relate to. That’s the same feeling I get when I read those romance novels where couples go at it consistently. Food, hydration, work, normal life are all apparently not as important as going one more round. I’m always awed and a little jealous of those fictional worlds. It was nice to read about a heroine who was out of the loop for once instead of the party girl. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that she is a librarian. I was not determined enough to get a masters of library science, but I have to admire those who do. Where would be we without them? It saddens me that they are becoming a little obsolete in this digital age. ANYWAY, Chris is that best friend who is a bit more straight laced than her friends. She seemed more of a normal girl character, but a realist one, not the ideal one we get fed in a lot of novels. I was immediately rooting for her to find her magical orgasm…and hopefully a nice boyfriend too. I wasn’t disappointed.

I didn’t love Scott immediately. I felt like he was risking A LOT just to sleep around with Chris and I didn’t know if that was justified. I mean, the boy has worked towards getting his own show for a while and now, on the cusp of that dream becoming a reality, he is willing to throw it all away to sleep with this one girl? I mean, I get attraction and lust and all that, but really, is it that preposterous to think that he couldn’t have waited 2 weeks for the filming to be over to go after her? Maybe that’s just me, but I felt like his interest was a little too much too quickly. Beyond that, though, he is sweet and thoughtful and does everything to help Chris through this mess she has gotten herself into. He laughs at her jobs, cracks ones of his own, and does everything he can to support Chris and lighten her load on the show. He is always there with advice and alcohol (because, really, there is no way for a shy-ish librarian to get through this without copious amounts of booze) in the background for the taking.

What I really loved about this was the humor. This is laugh out loud funny, with awkward moments, dirty sex jokes, and even a few smart jokes tossed in just to throw you off. Page one will have you snorting, page two will garner a laugh, and things escalate from there. I don’t think I stress enough how important comedy is in novels, but it really is a necessity. I hope I see more novels like this. I need more erotica that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

The only thing I didn’t like was that this felt too short. An argument can be made that a well written (and entertaining) novel always feels too short, but this felt especially….clipped? I would have liked to have seen more of the interactions with the contestants and rounded that side out. We know pretty early on where this is going to go and who Chris fancies, but I just felt like some scenes where cut short or a bit more explanation would have helped. Or even just added fluff to allow me time to digest what I’ve read. It was just one thing straight after another with little space between to really get a feel for what just happened. Leaving me wanting more is definitely the best probably to have in any novel, so I guess I can’t complain too much, right?

This is the second novel I’ve read this year labeled erotic comedy and I hope this becomes the next big trend because I definitely need more of this in my life. I know dark romance and new adult is all the rage right now and there are great, but don’t we need something a little lighter? Isn’t there room for more fluff? I certainly hope so. This novel was everything I expected it to be and more. I must admit that when I initially read Burstein’s Sneaking Candy, I never expected her to actually write Candy Sloane’s book, but I’m incredibly glad she did! This novel has the humor and the heart to keep me begging for me. I will happily continue to devour anything else Candy (and Lisa) decides to write!

Excerpt
Behind the Scenes
Make me come for the very first time. Twenty-five-year-old busty, blond, green-eyed, straitlaced librarian, looking for a guy to be able to do what no one before him has.
Above you’ll find the joke “Casual Encounters” post my best friend Allie put on Craigslist without my knowledge.
On the bright side, she’d referred to me as busty. On the not so bright side, her bawdy prank started a chain of crazier than crazy events that neither of us could have predicted.
Her post was true. I’d never had an orgasm during sex, or anything else I’d done with someone else. Yes, even with tongues, fingers, and things stuck in places my
mother and your mother would not want to hear about things being stuck.
My lack of orgasm without my trusty vibrator wasn’t something I bragged about, but I also didn’t think it was that weird.
I mean, Allie told me it was, but it was like rule number one of being friends with her to never believe anything she said. Her self-described sex life rivaled the tips in Cosmo magazine—the good parts that revealed confidences you were pretty sure no human had ever actually experienced, not the embarrassing anonymous stories that made you feel better about your own boring sex life.
Or at least, they’d made me feel better about mine.
I received the first response to Allie’s post while I was at work shelving books in the miniscule poetry section of the Bangor Public Library. I was using my recently awarded Masters of Library Science degree to its fullest for sure.
My phone buzzed in my back pocket. I picked it up with one hand and squeezed it between my ear and shoulder, balancing a huge volume by E.E. Cummings in my  other hand.
At the time I didn’t notice, but now, yes, I see the irony.
“Hello,” I whispered, glancing around to make sure I was alone among the shelves. We weren’t supposed to take calls in the library, and that day I wished I would have followed the rule I continually got reprimanded for breaking.
“I want to make you come,” a breathy voice oozed from the receiver, “I’m going to suck on your sweet, throbbing clit until…”
“Excuse me!?!” I screamed. Well, as loudly as you can in the middle of a library. My heart was pounding so chaotically the people using the free internet could probably hear it anyway.
“I’ll start by licking you nice and slow, all around your honey pot, till you’re begging for it, desperate for more. Then I’ll—”
I hung up. My throat ached. My face dimpled with sweat.
Honey pot? I was too freaked out to even appreciate the humor in a guy trying to talk dirty while using Winnie the Pooh as his muse.
Yes, freaked out. I was not turned on. I was terrified. I studied the phone number in my recent call list. It was local.
I tried to gather myself, smoothing my tight ponytail as I went back to shelving, but I couldn’t get his voice out of my head. I kept hearing him. The men I went out with never talked to me that way. No one had ever talked to me that way. I certainly didn’t like it, but I also couldn’t deny the adrenaline shooting and pinging through each limb like my body was a pinball machine.
I picked up a slim Anne Sexton paperback—yet another irony in hindsight—and squatted down. His voice still echoed. My thighs burned as I glided my fingers along the back spines on the bottom shelf looking for its space.
My phone vibrated again.
I glanced at the number before I answered, not the breathy-voiced sicko, another local call. I should have just let it go to voicemail. I should have, but I didn’t.
“Hello,” I answered, hesitantly, rubbing one finger along the frame of my glasses—chunky and bright red, a perfect contrast to my olive green eyes and the one style decision that always made people wonder about me.
“Hey baby,” a growl slithered over the line, “I hear you need a real man.”
“Who is this?” I whispered.
“Your daddy.”
I held out the phone and stared at it like it had come to life. I could still hear his voice thrusting through the receiver.
“You want it, don’t you? I’m going to bend you over a table and shove my twelve-inch-cock into your dripping wet pussy again and again, my finger right—”
I clicked end and threw my phone on the ground. My pulse was pounding so feverishly against my neck it was choking me. What the hell was going on?
Also, who in this world had a twelve-inch-cock? How did he walk with that thing unless he used it as a cane?
My phone came to life again, buzzing and lighting up from where it lay on the floor, like a horror movie where you thought the monster was dead, but really he was invincible.
I picked it up with the tips of two fingers and looked at it, yet another local number I didn’t recognize. I clicked for the call to go to voicemail.
It was 11:00 a.m., too early to take lunch, but I didn’t care. My phone vibrated in my hand as yet another call lit up the screen. I forced it to voicemail and texted Allie to drop everything and meet me at The Sundown.
If it was too early to take lunch, it was definitely too early to have a drink, but I needed one. It had to be five o’clock somewhere considering it was sex o’clock on my phone.

Losing her job and boyfriend in one drunken night, she’s determined to fix her life by going back to the moment when she let partying and sex take over. And do things right this time. At twenty-nine, she heads back to freshman year of college, with a catch.

A senior enduring years of regret, Carter is more than ready to graduate. He’s anxious to move on from the party his freshman year where he witnessed his frat brothers about to commit a sexual assault. When he meets the new freshman on his floor, spunky and confident Kate, he wonders if his time as an outcast has finally come to an end.

Kate and Carter’s growing friendship and undeniable attraction make it harder to hide the demons from their respective pasts. But when their secrets are finally revealed, will their chance at starting over together still be there?

Again Sale Alert

EXCERPT

Carter

I was startled by a knock at my door. A law book lay on my bare chest as I stared at the ceiling. I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t read. I couldn’t do anything but feel Kate’s hand on me.

After dinner and a longer than usual good-bye with Kate, I’d gone back to my room alone. I should have invited her back, but as good as it felt being with her, there was a part of me that knew it was wrong considering everything that had happened with Jeanie.

Kate made me forget my guilt, if only for a moment. I was still trying to decide if I deserved that reprieve.

I looked at the clock—it was well after midnight—probably someone with a noise complaint.

I stretched, yawned, and they knocked again, more forcefully.

I rose from the bed. I tried not to hope it was Kate, but the thought was like wind trying to bluster past what my mind crammed down. I pulled open the door.

She stood in the hall in a tight white T-shirt and a pair of even tighter yoga pants, my denied fantasies becoming real.

Considering she wasn’t wearing a bra, my fantasy wasn’t even close to how amazing real was. I couldn’t stop looking at her perfect tits curving through the fabric, her nipples popped at attention and begging for me to put one of them in my mouth.

My pulse thumped in my groin.

“I came to finish what we started,” she said, pushing past me into the room. “And I’m stone cold sober, so don’t even ask.”

I finally managed to shut the door and my mouth as she settled herself on the edge of my bed. Her hair was down and flicking like golden flames against her shoulders, her eyes wide and firmly fixed on mine.

“Maybe I’m coming on too strong,” she said, “but I couldn’t sleep and I kind of thought after the car today, you probably couldn’t either.”

Any questions I had fell away. The certainty she had to be mine became my only answer.

“I never want to finish what we started,” I said, the words the only truth that mattered in that moment, “I never want this to be over.”

My body could do nothing but move next to her on the bed and kiss her. My heartbeat seemed to make the mattress vibrate below us. It was the only thing I could hear, her breath and my heart and our lips and tongues swirling against each other at the same tempo.

“This is progress,” she said, pulling back to cup my cheekbone.

I considered telling her why I hadn’t been able to go through with what she was pushing for. Why I’d made her stop earlier—the reason aside from my past. Because it had been so long since I’d been with someone, the thought of it was almost too much to take.

When she touched me earlier I almost exploded. So not cool. So not the guy I hoped to be for her. But that would have made me feel like a child, like someone she needed to lead.

She deserved to know how badly I wanted her, too. She wasn’t pushing me to do anything.

I ran my thumb along her palm, against each finger, her blood sliding hot as lava underneath. I kissed her again and took her shirt off in one quick motion. I ran my hands over her tits. The skin was so soft, her nipples getting harder as I stroked, seeming to beg for me as my fingers wandered. She let out a moan that echoed in the back of my throat, her tongue pushed against mine, hungrier, harder.

Her penetrating kisses became as insistent as the only words in my head—I need to be inside her.

Our bodies fell against each other with no barriers, only hot, searching skin.

Just the two people we were when we were alone together.

No pasts, no secrets, solely enveloped by the truth of our need, our want.

She pulled back and curved her hands over the muscles of my chest like she was trying to cement her decision. I was glad she stopped. I didn’t want this to end too quickly for a lot of reasons. The least of which was embarrassing myself.

She rose from the bed and stood in front of me, allowing me to take her in.

Her half-naked visage was too much, I had to touch her again, the pull as raw as a magnet.

Forget going slow. I reached out for her, the temptation seared like a hot poker in my groin.

She shook her head and slid off her pants, revealing she wasn’t even wearing panties. A rush ran through me, so strong I could barely breathe. She’d known exactly what she wanted to do when she walked down our dorm hallway.

I made myself inhale and exhale. She was way too hot for me to keep my cool, but I had to try. I could barely sit still, barely speak. “Wow,” I said my eyes darting seemingly everywhere, to her smooth stomach, the bow-like curve of her tits and ass, her long legs, her gentle shoulder blades, and back again to those perfect tits.

“I told you you’d never forget.”

“I mean it,” I replied, practically whistling.

“Just FYI,” she smiled. “I haven’t been wearing them all day.” She indicated her empty pants below her.

“If I would have known I would never have been able to stop you earlier.” It was true. I was drowning now with her next to me, so ready, so willing.

So mine.

“No, I’m glad you did,” she said. “This is perfect.”

Feasting on her silhouette against my desk lamp, I had to admit it was.

“You are perfect,” I said, standing to join her.

She went for the button of my pants, her eyes glued to mine, wanting to enjoy my reaction as she took me into her hand.

My whole body trembled at her touch, but this time I would be able to do something about it. I was dizzy as she continued to stroke me, a flash that made me blind. It’s not like I’d been a monk for three years, but I hadn’t been with anyone else. Having her hands on me was like a drug I hadn’t even known I was addicted to.

I couldn’t wait anymore. I picked her up and she wrapped her legs around me as I entered her. Her soft warmth was searing and shook me. With each thrust I felt more and more like I was floating, flying, like she was holding me above the ground. The two of us were suspended in each other, like a tornado, spinning.

Her breath quickened. Her chin on my shoulder, her lips on my neck. “More,” she said, her words no match for my pumping jugular.

I obliged, giving her everything. Thrashing against her with so much force the back of my thighs ached, my hips burned. She was about to come. I pulled back, teasing her, teasing myself. She bit down on my shoulder and wailed seconds before her whole body shook. I echoed, coming like a freight train, three weeks of want and three years of isolation hitting me all at once.

I held her against me, listening to her breath—there was nothing else but her and me in this whole world.

I kissed her lightly, tasting her mouth. “That was worth waiting for.”

She could have no idea I’d meant for more than our three week ballet. I’d meant all my three years of solitude. I’d meant all my life.
Her brown eyes were wild and shining, her cheeks blushed pink as if she was my palette and my touch was her paint.

My drought, as Tristan had called it, needed to be broken by a woman deserving of a flood. Who could make me drown and save me simultaneously?

“Worth doing again?” she asked, snaking her hand down to see if I was ready.

Candice Salinas is a creative writing grad student who just wants to be taken seriously. Since her fellowship only covers her tuition, she started writing (and self-publishing) erotic romance novels as Candy Sloane to make ends meet. And, surprise, she is relatively successful, making enough off her novels to pay her rent. But her asshat faculty advisor would disapprove and no one would take second look at her serious writing if they knew she was moonlighting as an erotic romance writer, nevermind that she kinda loves doing it (pun intended). Then James walks into the picture, as if she needs more drama. The hot barista a local coffee shop, he’s finally taken interest in her like she’s fantasized about for quite some time. But, unfortunately, he is now a student in one of the classes she teaches to earn her fellowship. The relationship is strictly forbidden, but sometimes Candy sneaks into her brain and she can’t help sneaking around with him. With so much to lose, will Candice strike out or will things work out for the best?

Candice is that character with split personalities, one minute being the level-headed, if somewhat insecure, Candice and the other being the confident Candy who goes after what she wants. While I can understand jumping between the two roles, I also became a bit annoyed when she was being overly dickish to James, who was a complete sweetheart. She usually feels a great deal of remorse and apologizes, but I still wanted to strangle her when she was getting out of hand. What made me love her, despite the drama, was how this was more about her becoming more confident in both personalities. She starts out somewhat proud, but embarrassed about her romance novels, and completely lacking the confidence needed to stand up behind her books and proclaim that there was nothing wrong with writing them and that it didn’t make her a “lesser” author like some asshats like to imply. But she grows and learns and by the end is ready to stop hiding her secondary persona. I am woman, hear me roar, type of thing.

Then we have James, the sweetest guy imaginable. He genuinely likes Candice, regardless of which personality she is displaying and puts her with her hot and cold crap. One minute she is all over him and the next she is cold as ice, claiming this can’t happen because she is his teacher and it’s not worth losing her career over. Somehow, despite Candice’s attempts to push him away, he still remains by her side when she needs him, proving time and again that they need to give it a try regardless of the fact that it would be highly frowned upon. He’s got that great ability to deliver witty comebacks when necessary and walk away when Candice is being absurd. And, of course, he’s hot enough to catch anyone’s eye.

This does have a slight love triangle, but it isn’t one of those massively annoying ones where the girls is leading two guys on because she can’t decide. She likes both in the beginning and, once she gets to know both better, it’s pretty obvious she only really likes one of them. No cliffhangers to be found either, since it is a stand alone. And, not instalove. In fact, the characters haven’t even said those three magical words to each other by the end of the book. They like each other and are attracted and really want to try the whole relationship thing, but the L word is never mentioned. So we are joyously free of the three main hang-ups I have these days.

It’s definitely a different from any other NA novel I’ve read because neither character harbors a disturbing past. There are no abusive exes or parents or attempt rape or anything sinister like that lurking in shadows of this novel. Not that I’m downplaying those elements in a NA novel because I’ve deeply loved many of those stories, but it’s absent here. Plus the idea of a serious writer moonlighting as an erotica author is fascinating. I’ve always wondered if any of the erotica authors feel a little embarrassed of their profession. I’m not implying that there is anything to be embarrassed about, more that I can see where it would steam from. I imagine introducing yourself to strangers as a professional erotic romance writer can be daunting because there is a stigma attached to it. Well there is a stigma attached to romance in general, but erotic romance especially. It was interesting to explore Candice’s feelings about her in-the-closet profession, becoming more and more proud of who she really was and the message her novels sent. Sure, they were smutty, but they still made people feel things and told a story that her readers loved, so what more can you ask for? For writing to be worthwhile, must it be dull and dry? I certainly hope not, for my sake as well as Candice’s. I love that, by the end, she is proud of her Candy novels and is ready to stop hiding them from the world. I love books that support that type of message, you know? That one that say be yourself regardless of what the world things. Fuck your parents, fuck your colleagues, and, most importantly, fuck the naysayers. If it is what makes you a happy and you can legitimately make a living off it, then go for it. We need more novels with that message.

It’s also very funny. Readers searching for something that will make you giggle and snort constantly, this is it. Penis jokes and double entendres galore, all of which had me giggling or smiling or somehow showing my glee. There are double entendre alerts every few pages and all of them at least made me smile. Here is a novel that isn’t afraid to show its pervy side. Speaking of pervy, we get a great few steamy scenes that does Burstein credit. The undeniable chemistry between Candice and James heats up every scene between the two, even the ones where they aren’t getting along.

This novel shines because of its originality, it’s humor, and the “be yourself” theme behind the story. It’s creative and different and exactly what I was looking for. Lisa Burstein is definitely an author to watch because it’s apparent she is going to do great things!
