Nineteen year old Joni is loving life as an adult—living on her own, dealing with grown-up things like jobs, hook-ups, and doing her own laundry. Best of all: after finishing her first year at ASU, she will never again be called a freshman.
But when her brother is suddenly killed in a car accident, Joni’s adult life is turned upside down. Struggling to cope with loss, guilt, and anger—not to mention the meddling of friends and family trying to “fix” her—Joni is relieved to be presented with an escape in the form of a sailing trip her brother had been planning for months before he died.
With her first step onto the sailing vessel Lady Marguerite, Joni plunges into an adventure that will mark the beginning of her real adult life—a journey across the ominous dark blue of the Atlantic Ocean with a small, eccentric crew, and the young Captain Reid, whose gorgeous looks are only outmatched by his talent for care and kindness. Unfolding through the ups and downs of life at sea is an unforgettable story reminding us that love will always be a work-in-progress and coming of age never gets old.

Joni Monday was a character I could definitely relate to almost immediately.  She’s floundering a bit in life.  She’s in college, pursuing a career in graphic design that she isn’t really that passionate about.  She soldiers on and plays softball.  Softball is something else she isn’t very passionate about.  There isn’t much in her life that she shows passion towards.  When her brother dies unexpectedly, she is upset, but she hadn’t spoken to her brother in several years.  They weren’t very close, especially towards the end of his life.  Suddenly she is offered his all expense paid trip around the world on a boat.  With little preparation, she jumps a plan to set off on this unsure adventure.  That adventure changes her whole life.  It changes her perspective.  It finally introduces her to someone who is very passionate about things.   More about him later though.  Joni herself finds something to be passionate about.  She finds something she really enjoys, not that she does just because she needs to move her life forward.
The someone who is passionate about things is Reid.  He is the captain of the boat Joni boards.  He is smart and (very) attractive and confident in all things.  The way he commands the boat and the people upon it just put me in awe almost immediately.  I read a lot of YA fiction and one thing that lacks is characters (male or female) who are confident in themselves without being cocky.  So that was very refreshing for me to see.  Beyond that, once you learn more about this trip they are on and it’s purpose, it makes me weak in the knees.  What Reid is doing is such a powerful thing and it’s so commendable that I wouldn’t have words even if I could mention it properly without giving away spoilers.
Beyond the main two, there is an entire (small) boat full of cast members.  There are two old men, a bi-racial couple, and a teenage Asian girl.  They are all aboard for different reasons, but also for similar reasons.  It was a very diverse, interesting cast.  Each character had their own set of flaws and strengths.  Each character felt very well developed and rounded out.
Joni, Underway was a very interesting novel to have the pleasure of reading.  I am a very big fan of Kelly Oram’s young adult work, so when she announced she was writing an adult novel, I knew I’d have to read it.  It didn’t disappoint.  I can’t say I like it better than her YA (because those are perfect), but it was definitely an enjoyable read. As you’ll see Kelly mention in the interview below, adult contemporary moves at a slower pace than YA and it’s much more detailed.  In YA, you can glance over some details because they don’t matter to teens, but adults pay more attention.  That slower pace means it took longer for me to really get into the novel.  I was interested in it and I wanted to see where it went, but it didn’t quite hook me in the beginning.  That’s part of why it got four stars instead of five.  The other big reasons was character death.  In context, they were inevitable, but that doesn’t mean I have to be happy about them!

All in all, I definitely enjoyed this novel.  I think Kelly Oram and Jonathan Harrow make an excellent writing team and I will be sure to keep my eyes open for any work they decide to collaborate on in the future.  This is a well-written novel about a girl finding herself at sea.  It’s smart, it’s funny, it’s got a plot-twist or two I didn’t see coming.  What more could you ask for?

  INTERVIEW WITH KELLY & JONATHAN
  1. What is your favorite part of the writing process?

Jonathan: For me, the planning stage is the most enjoyable. This is the part between the development of the initial idea and the actual writing. My planning stage is very detailed—the final result is a scene-by-scene guide of the entire plot. But at the beginning of the process the story is still wide open and can go in any direction. I enjoy this freedom, being able to sit down, put music on, and tell myself: “Okay, just let your mind go to wherever it wants to go within the context of this story idea, and let’s see what we get.” During one of these sessions, I might come up with six or seven interesting ideas, and then my job is to decide which of those are worth trying to incorporate into the story. A lot of it gets thrown out by the end, but eventually I’ve got enough of these interesting bits to string together into plot. For me, it’s the most creative part of the process, as opposed to the actual writing, which feels more like work.

Kelly: Believe it or not, the more I write, the more I enjoy the re-writing process. I still love writing that first thirty thousand words the best. There’s something magical about getting a fresh start and introducing new characters. Plus, the romance lover in me will always favor the meet-cute moment. (The moment where the main love interests meet for the first time.) But I’ve really come to appreciate rewriting. After the pressure of finishing the story is gone and I can sit back and take a good look at it. There are always things that can be changed and made better. I know that, but I’m always still surprised how much stronger my books get after revisions. Just ask my beta readers! I love watching something I really like become something I absolutely love!

  1. What is your least favorite part of the writing process?

Jonathan: I don’t enjoy some elements of the feedback and re-writing phase. I know how vital that aspect is, because every one of my stories has improved greatly because of feedback from others. There’s no disputing that. Feedback and rewriting always makes your story better. But after the herculean task of finishing a first draft, I mentally close the project, and I’m ready to move on to the next shiny new idea, so it can be difficult to go back and rework old stuff. I get impatient with that process. Kelly is much better at this. She’s gone back and re-written entire books, practically from scratch. That’s an amazing feat.

Kelly: And yet, my least favorite aspect of writing is kind of the same. I love the feedback/re-writing phase. But I swear I have story ADD. I get very impatient and jump from story to story all the time. Right now I have eight current works in progress, and that’s not including outlined ideas or sequels that need to be written. My least favorite part of the process is how long it takes to get through one story, or having deadlines that force me to focus on one book for a long period of time. It stresses me out not to be able to decide on a whim that I’m not feeling a story that day and want to start something new. When writing was only my hobby, I could totally do that, or even completely abandon a story if I got bored with it. Now, as a published author I have a responsibility to keep to a schedule. UGH. Schedules are my archenemy! (Though they happen to be Jonathan’s best friend!)

  1. What is your favorite scene in Joni, Underway?

Jonathan: This is easy for me. It’s one of the first scenes I envisioned in the planning stage, and I couldn’t wait to actually write it. There’s a point in the story when Joni has learned the very basics of sailing, just enough to realize how difficult it can be, and how dangerous it can be out on the ocean. So she’s just starting to get more comfortable on the boat, and then BOOM, she’s thrown into her first real test when Captain Reid falls overboard, leaving Joni as the only person on the crew who knows how to control this 53 foot boat that is being pushed by strong winds away from Reid. It’s up to her to use what little she has learned so far in order to turn the boat around and get back to Reid before he drowns and/or freezes to death. It’s the first time we really see Joni’s true inner strength, and it also serves as a turning point in the love story.

Kelly: I agree that’s one of my favorite scenes too. Jonathan always likes the big, action packed, high-tension scenes, but I live for the smaller moments. I think my favorite scene in the book comes right after that scene. Once the craziness is over, Joni has a moment by herself to really sit down and process what had just happened, what could have happened, and everything she’d just accomplished. It’s a quiet moment of personal reflection and emotion. And then she has a moment with Reid after that, that still makes me swoon. My favorite scenes in books are always the ones that make me feel it. That scene really got to me.

  1. What inspired Joni, Underway?

Jonathan: I can speak for both Kelly and I on this one. “Joni, Underway” began as an idea I had while watching “Deadliest Catch”, that show about lobster fishermen. That whole world is so foreign to me, and I remember thinking: “Gosh, what if a city guy like me had to go work on one of these boats?” It would be a life changing experience. That sparked an instant comparison to “City Slickers,” a movie I have always loved. The idea sat in my mind for years, and then when Kelly and I were looking for a romance/drama to work on together, the “City Slickers on a lobster boat” idea morphed into “Joni, Underway.” Kelly was sold on the idea as soon as I said, “She falls in love with the boat’s super hot captain!”

Kelly: Yup. And I’m still sold. Captain Reid… *Swoon!*

  1. (For Kelly specifically) How did writing an adult novel differ from writing YA?

Kelly: It’s hard!!! Honestly, that’s why I needed a co-writer. Adult fiction feels so different to me. It needs more depth, and a wider range of characters and storylines. Everything has to be just a little bit more detailed, just a little bit more mature. (And considering my maturity peaked at the age of fifteen, well…) I think I have the hardest time with description. YA moves at a much faster pace than adult fiction and I’m always way too impatient to give each scene, each setting, and each character the time that they deserve. It was fun though, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I brave a women’s fiction or chick-lit novel on my own some day. I’ve already got a couple of ideas brewing.

Day 1 of Science Geek Appreciation Week – Spotlight for The Avery Shaw Experiment by Kelly Oram

Welcome to Day 1 of Science Geek Appreciation Week with author Kelly Oram–a fun-filled week of teasers, interviews, games, giveaways, and lots and lost of science! We’re going to kick off the week by introducing you to the stars of the Spanish Fork High Science Squad–Club President Avery Shaw and her newest recruit, Grayson Kennedy–in their debut novel The Avery Shaw Experiment.

Title: The Avery Shaw Experiment
Author: Kelly Oram
Publication Date: May 4, 2013
Publisher: Bluefields
Pages: 221
My rating: 5 bows
Available: Amazon | iBooks | B&N | Kobo

Summary: When Avery Shaw’s heart is shattered by her life-long best friend, she chooses to deal with it the only way she knows how—scientifically.

The state science fair is coming up and Avery decides to use her broken heart as the topic of her experiment. She’s going to find the cure. By forcing herself to experience the seven stages of grief through a series of social tests, she believes she will be able to get over Aiden Kennedy and make herself ready to love again. But she can’t do this experiment alone, and her partner (ex partner!) is the one who broke her heart.

Avery finds the solution to her troubles in the form of Aiden’s older brother Grayson. The gorgeous womanizer is about to be kicked off the school basketball team for failing physics. He’s in need of a good tutor and some serious extra credit. But when Avery recruits the lovable Grayson to be her “objective outside observer,” she gets a whole lot more than she bargained for, because Grayson has a theory of his own: Avery doesn’t need to grieve. She needs to live. And if there’s one thing Grayson Kennedy is good at, it’s living life to the fullest.

I was so out of it that I’d slipped into the bathroom while Grayson was in the shower, and I didn’t even notice until he poked his head out from behind the curtain with a surprised look on his face. “Aves, babe, I’m a little busy here.” He cocked an eyebrow and gave me a crooked smile. “Unless you’re planning to join me…?”

Just then there was a loud knock on the door, and my mother’s worried voice called out to me. I looked up at Grayson and in a moment of sheer panic didn’t think twice before jumping behind the curtain with him.

“Whoa! Avery! I was only teasing!”

I could hear Grayson, but I couldn’t really respond. I leaned my back against the cold tile wall and closed my eyes, letting the hot water rain down on me.

There was another knock, louder this time, and then the door opened. “Avery? That you in here, sweetie?”

I frantically shook my head, praying that Grayson would do the right thing.

“Sorry, Kaitlin. It’s just me.”

“Oh. Sorry, Grayson. I thought maybe you were Avery.”

“Yeah, I get that a lot,” he teased.

My mom laughed and then sighed heavily. “If you see her after you’re done, tell her I’m looking for her.”

“Will do.”

The door clicked shut and things got quiet. I stood there for so long that my head started to hurt and I got really dizzy. My knees buckled.

Grayson quickly caught me under the arms. “Avery, breathe,” he commanded.

I took a breath. As oxygen flooded my lungs, I realized it was probably the first breath I’d taken in minutes. Literally.

“Aves,” a low steady voice said. I felt hands on either side of my face. I opened my eyes, and Grayson’s beautiful piercing blue ones were staring down at me from just inches away, taking up my entire field of vision. “You good now?” he asked.

I may have been breathing, but I would never be “good” again. I flung my arms around him and began to release gut-wrenching sobs into his chest.
Grayson

I always looked at her as sort of a pesky little sister, but that all changed the day my brother dumped her. Why, you ask? Let me put it this way: When a girl lets you be the one to hold her as her entire world falls apart, even though you’re ass naked, it changes the way you see her. The soaking-wet, see-through t-shirt didn’t hurt, either.

“You look really nice,” I blurted, unable to hide my surprise.

The compliment startled her. She blushed and looked at her feet as she mumbled, “I need to blow my hair dry.”

I grinned. “Don’t want to have to explain to anyone how it got wet, eh?”

She turned even brighter red but then glared at me. “I just don’t want my hair to freeze.”

I laughed as I threw my hands up in surrender and then laughed even harder when she stalked past me into the bathroom.

I leaned against the door and watched, curiously, as she dried her hair. There was something oddly fascinating about watching Little Avery Shaw primp. She’d never seemed like such a real girl to me before. She wasn’t so little anymore, either.

She caught me staring at her in the mirror, so I quickly said, “I thought dorks were supposed to have bad hair and horrible, frumpy fashion senses.”

“Just because I enjoy learning doesn’t mean I’m a dork,” she said, insulted.

“Two words for you Aves: science club.”

My Review:

After I read Cinder & Ella, I didn’t think it was possible for me to love anything Oram wrote more.  That may sound like an idiotic statement, but I LOVED Cinder & Ella (you can read my review here).  I don’t think I liked Avery Shaw more than Cinder & Ella, but they are probably tied for my top Oram experience.

Avery Shaw was a character I liked immediately.  She’s smart and sweet and completely head-over-heels for her best friend Aiden.  When she learns that not only does Aiden not return her feelings, but he has already started dating someone else, she’s crushed.  She’s beyond crushed, she is more like devastated.  It goes deeper than just the loss of her best friend, it was that Aiden was her other half.  The two have been inseparable for their whole lives and now her world just feels empty and quiet.  I love the way she approached it.  She could have wallowed in her grief, but she decides to take a hit for science instead.  Don’t get me wrong, she does wallow some and she goes through a real emotional struggle, but she doesn’t focus only on that.  She was just a great character to get behind and I loved her.

Then we have the real star, Grayson Kennedy.  What can I say, I’m a sucker for hot, somewhat cocky guys.  What really won me over, though, was how sweet he was to Avery.  He goes above and beyond to help her get over his idiot brother and I loved reading from his perspective.  The way he started to see Aves differently and really fall for her was priceless.  He agrees to help her in her science project and just makes me swoon into melty puddles on the floor.  Seriously, how Avery manages to resist his charms for so long is beyond me.  Either way, I’d take him over Aiden any day of the week.

This started out as a story I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about.  I mean, I knew I’d enjoy it, but I’m a big fan of the whole best friends turn into more story and I thought I would root more for Aiden.  I almost always root for the life-long friend over the newbie, but since Grayson has been a staple in Avery’s life just as long as Aiden, that was almost negated.  Plus, Aiden is a pretty big dick to Aves in the beginning of this book.  I mean, the dude is supposed to be her best friend and he is a straight up asshole to her.  I was also nervous because I had super high expectations.  I’ve heard many good things about this and this was the Oram novel that initially caught my attention.  I love the cover.  I mean, LOVE.   It is one of my favorite YA covers ever.  It’s cute and nerdy and completely captures the feel of the book.  That doesn’t happen often.

Basically, this novel is the perfect contemporary YA story.  It’s smart, it’s funny, it’s cute, it’s everything I expected it to be and  more.  It has great characters, an interesting plot, and it packs quite a punch for being so small.  Kelly Oram really knows how to make every page count.  This was a novel I read straight through in one sitting and that alone speaks volumes.  One this is for sure, Kelly Oram is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors and I cannot wait to read The Libby Garrett Intervention!

Ellie’s Sweet 16 is a summer of firsts.
First car.
First kiss.
First boyfriend.

First serial-killing stalker…?

Hockey-obsessed tomboy Eleanor Westley has never been the object of a guy’s affection before. So when the hottest boy she’s ever seen moves in across the street and starts treating her like she’s the center of his universe, naturally she’s going to be a little skeptical. But everything starts to make sense when girls who look just like Ellie start dying all around the city. Obviously the new guy is the killer, and of course he only likes her because he wants to slice her into tiny pieces. Right?

The more Ellie gets to know Seth the more she’s convinced he’s a psychopathic killer. Problem is, he’s the sweetest psychopathic killer she’s ever met. Not to mention he’s brutally hot. No matter how hard she tries, she can’t help but fall for him.

From the best selling young adult author of The Avery Shaw Experiment and V is for Virgin, comes a lovable, quirky, and wildly funny coming of age contemporary romance about a girl, her strange but hot neighbor, and the crazy summer that changed both of their lives forever.

Snippet

“Bruno, no! Stay! Bad dog!” I called when I realized he wasn’t going to stop. But it was too late. Bruno jumped up and knocked me right off my skates.

Everything happened so fast. I crashed back against my driveway hard, and for a second, things went totally black. When I came to my ears were ringing, my head was pounding, and I felt like I was going to vomit at any moment. Then, just as I’d suspected would happen, a giant tongue attacked my face.
Bruno only got the chance to give me one good lick before he yelped and fell limp beside me. That’s when I looked up to see the new guy staring down at me with the most intense eyes I’d ever seen. And, get this. He was holding a Taser. “Hi, Ellie,” he said in a strong, deep voice. “It’s nice to meet you.”
Well of course I screamed. The psycho just killed the Haskins’ dog. I screamed loud enough that the J’s probably heard me all the way at camp. Then I tried my best to push the new kid away from me, but he was too strong. I would have freaked out that such a hot boy was touching me, except I was too busy freaking out that such a hot boy was touching me! Pinning me to the ground, actually.
“Easy there, Ellie,” New Guy ordered me and then did the weirdest thing ever. He took off his shirt.
Not that I didn’t appreciate what was under his shirt, but I screamed again. Well what was I supposed to do? The guy comes out of nowhere, kills a dog, pins me to the ground, and takes his clothes off? Oh yeah, and he knows my name. How does he know my name?
It wasn’t until he wadded up his shirt and plastered it against the back of my head that I realized maybe he wasn’t attacking me. Once I understood this it finally dawned on me how much pain I was in.

I was trying to make her nervous on purpose. My whole intent tonight was to make her see me in a new way. What better way to do that than to crawl into bed with her in the middle of the night?
We hadn’t been in bed together since we were kids. Back when the fact that we were the opposite sex didn’t matter. It definitely mattered now. She looked so incredibly sexy at the moment that I could hardly think of anything other than the fact that I wanted to obliterate the word “friendship” from all known languages.
“What happened to the Disney Princess nightgown you wore the last time we were in bed together? That was hot.”
But not nearly as hot as the tank top and panties she was wearing right now. Damn. I hadn’t expected her to sleep so risqué. I’d genuinely been prepared for Captain America pajamas or something, considering her infatuation with Chris Evans. But this…she looked… Double damn. Even if this plan totally backfired on me tonight, right now it felt like the best idea I’d ever had.
As I took a mental picture of her, Dani finally realized she wasn’t wearing a bra and freaked out, pulling her covers up over her chest while glaring at me. If she hadn’t been awake before, she definitely was now. “You’d better have a damn good reason for being here or you’re going to be very sorry.”
She was pissed but it was worth it. I gave her a pout. “Since when do I need a reason?”
She opened her mouth to unleash a verbal tirade but I lifted a hand to stop her. I didn’t need to hear her rant. No lecture in the world was going to make me feel bad for sneaking in here and catching a semi-naughty glimpse of her. Am I shameless? Why, yes. Yes I am. It’s one of my many talents.

Chameleon (Supernaturals#1)
For small-town rebel Dani Webber magic and monsters are no more real than the Easter Bunny… until the day she accidentally stops time. Dani quickly discovers that not only do supernaturals exist, but she herself is one of them. This is great news for her life-long best friend Russ, who can finally come clean about his own supernatural status and his undying love for her. Before the two can start to enjoy the long overdue relationship, Dani is taken by a powerful council of supernaturals who believe she is the Chosen One destined to save them from extinction.

As if being kidnapped and expected to save the world isn’t bad enough, an ancient prophecy warns of the Chosen One’s dark nature: “Only the truest love will keep her an agent for good.” The council believes they know who this “true love” is and, unfortunately, that person isn’t Russ. The mysterious, powerful and devastatingly handsome Seer is the last person Dani wants in her life, but when she starts having visions of a horrific future, she has no one else to turn to for help.

Soon Dani finds herself torn between two very different boys with two very different opinions of whom she can trust. With the visions getting worse and time running out, Dani is forced to put aside her feelings and work with both the Seer and Russ before an ancient evil is unleashed upon the earth.

DESCRIPTION

It’s been almost a year since eighteen-year-old Ella Rodriguez was in a car accident that left her crippled, scarred, and without a mother. After a very difficult recovery, she’s been uprooted across the country and forced into the custody of a father that abandoned her when she was a young child. If Ella wants to escape her father’s home and her awful new stepfamily, she must convince her doctors that she’s capable, both physically and emotionally, of living on her own. The problem is, she’s not ready yet. The only way she can think of to start healing is by reconnecting with the one person left in the world who’s ever meant anything to her—her anonymous Internet best friend, Cinder.

Hollywood sensation Brian Oliver has a reputation for being trouble. There’s major buzz around his performance in his upcoming film The Druid Prince, but his management team says he won’t make the transition from teen heartthrob to serious A-list actor unless he can prove he’s left his wild days behind and become a mature adult. In order to douse the flames on Brian’s bad-boy reputation, his management stages a fake engagement for him to his co-star Kaylee. Brian isn’t thrilled with the arrangement—or his fake fiancée—but decides he’ll suffer through it if it means he’ll get an Oscar nomination. Then a surprise email from an old Internet friend changes everything.

INTERVIEW

I’m color coding! My questions are in normal black and Kelly’s responses are in pink.

1. Was there any music that inspired Cinder & Ella or helped you in the writing process?
I can’t write with music on. It’s too distracting for me. But I usually have some sort of playlist for each book I write. It’s just a list of songs that remind me of the book or certain characters. I have quite a long playlist for Cinder & Ella. I won’t list all the songs here, but I’ll tell you the one song that I’ve adopted as Brian & Ella’s song. It’s Parachute by Train. If you get a chance, listen to it. Both the lyrics and the tone of the song sort of sum up Brian and Ella’s relationship for me.

What was your favorite scene to write in Cinder & Ella?
There were several scenes that I had a lot of fun with, but my favorite is definitely the scene where Brian and Ella meet for the first time. I don’t want to give anything away, but it was a lot of fun. It doesn’t happen right away because their relationship is an anonymous online relationship, so was really excited to finally get to that point in the book. I think the readers will enjoy it too because of all the anticipation building up to it.

What was the hardest scene to write in Cinder & Ella?
This is a tough question because scenes can be hard to write for a lot of different reasons. I’m not sure I can narrow it down to one. I had trouble with the stepmom’s character at first. I wasn’t sure exactly how I wanted to portray her for a while so all of the scenes with her in them were difficult and came out very flat. I had to go back and rewrite her plotline several times.

Cinder is a young actor. Was there any particular Hollywood inspiration for his character?
No. Not specifically. I just sort of pulled from all the young celebrities you hear about in the media—Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Zac Effron… I can imagine it’s difficult for them, and I remember what it was like to be that age. I don’t think I could have survived fame.

What’s your best piece of advice for aspiring authors?
Two things: read and write. First, read a lot. Anything and everything you can get your hands on. You’d be surprised how much you will absorb subconsciously. Second, write, write, and write some more. Like any skill, hobby or talent, practice makes perfect.

What do you enjoy writing more: series or stand-alone?
I definitely prefer stand-alones. It takes a long time to write a book. Months and months of your life. Start piling sequels on top of that and before you know it years have gone by with the same story. It’s easy to get tired of a set of characters. I always have a stand-alone in the works at the same time as the series I work on because I need to be able to change it up. I need new and fresh. There’s also a certain amount of pressure in writing sequels—preset expectations. People will hold you to a higher standard and have an idea of how they think a story should play out. It’s a bit daunting when you sit there staring at the blank screen knowing you have to write the end to a series that people already love and have been waiting years for. It’s not my favorite thing in the world.

What is the hardest part of the writing process?
Being patient, and not giving up when something isn’t working. Your first instinct is to write the first thing that pops into your head, but that’s usually the most cliché way of doing something. And then when you have a first draft done, you want to feel like you’re finished, but you’re actually far far far from the finish line. You want to share it with people, so waiting to make sure you’ve done it right is hard. But it’s necessary!

What is the best part of the writing process?
Being able to create. I am a very imaginative person. There are always a ton of ideas, scenes, and characters fighting for attention in my brain. I love being able to put those thoughts down on paper and watch something solid take shape. I love ending up with a story that I can read and love, and having characters that I can cherish.

What is your favorite Cinderella retelling?
Well I have a favorite book and a favorite movie. For the book, it’s Cindy Ella by Robin Palmer. This is a very cute YA contemporary retelling. I loved the characters and just had fun while reading it. Movie wise I have to go with the Hillary Duff movie, A Cinderella Story. This is again, just too much fun. Hillary is always cute, Jennifer Coolidge is hilarious and hello…Chad Michael Murray? Yes please!

What’s your favorite writing snack?
This is a truly important question. Writers actually get very set in their snacking ways. For me it’s popcorn (original butter and salt flavor), Diet Coke, and Sour Patch Kids. Healthy, I know, but it’s like religion for me. I need my brain food to write!

What made you want to write a Cinderella retelling out of all the other fairy tales?
Easy. Cinderella has always been my favorite fairy tale. I’ve always known I would write one, it was just a matter of figuring out the way I wanted to do it.

Are you planning on writing any other fairy tale retelling?
It’s a possibility. I have one story that I’m already plotting. There are clues to which fairy tale it is in Cinder & Ella. If you’re paying attention when you read it, you figure it out! But I also have a lot on my plate right now and might not be able to get to it. I’ve got SIX works in progress right now, and my top priority is finishing up both my Jamie Baker series and my Supernaturals series. If I can get those done I might take a look at some more fairy tales. (Assuming no other new story else has consumed my brain by then…)

MY REVIEW

Ella’s life was going relatively well. She had a loving mother, a successful book and movie review blog, and Cinder, her internet bestie. A terrible car accident changed all that. Now she is forced to live with the father who abandoned her and his new wife and her children. Even though she is legally old enough to decide for herself, she has no say in the matter. Her injuries from the crash were severe and before she can be allowed to live on her own, she has to prove she is ready for it. Her first step? Reconnect with Cinder. Cinder, AKA hot Hollywood actor Brian Oliver, has a reputation for trouble. His PR team thinks the only way he can be taken seriously as an actor is if the world believes he has settled down a bit. From that, a scheme is born. Fake an engagement with his current co-star is the perfect solution. He’s not happy, but willing to go along, at least until he receives an email from a long lost friend that changes everything.

Ella has the worst luck in the beginning of this novel, or for the most part really. The loss of her mother is bad enough, especially considering how close they were. Add to that, her crippling injuries and the sting of having to live with the woman her dad abandoned her for, and I’m almost surprised she was never truly suicidal. Her relationship with her dad is awkward and rocky to start with, her step-mom seems kinda clueless, and her step-sisters are downright cruel. She has lost everything important to her in one fell swoop and it’s difficult to be optimistic after that. When she emails Cinder, she isn’t expecting much and she is blown away by his response. As their relationship rekindles, she comes a bit more out of her shell. I really loved her and felt bad for her. The scene where she learns her dad donated all her books hit me almost as hard as it hit her. You did what? How could you? How does anyone look at books and think “mmhmm…these can’t be that important to anyone”?

Maybe I’m not normal, but when I see someone’s book collection, that would be the last thought that would enter my mind. Books are precious and especially ones with memories attached to them. I just wanted to hug her and help her and make things better.

Cinder/Brian was a character I didn’t initially love. I realize I have no idea how Hollywood works, but I hated the idea that he would be okay with fake-marrying someone as a publicity stunt. I realize that shit probably does happen, but I can’t get behind it. After we get over that hiccup, though, I loved him. I loved his devotion to Ella and his love for The Cinder Chronicles. Honestly, I’d love any guy passionate enough about a book series to argue with a blogger over it and then fight to play the role in the film adaptation.

Speaking of The Cinder Chronicles, is it real? It’s not, because I did an pretty hardcore search online trying to find it, but can it be? Kelly?

Can you make that happen? Can we have an epic spin-off of this? I don’t think I’m the only one who feels this way. I think it would be a roaring success. That’s just something for you to think about because I’d seriously love to get my hands on it. It sounds awesome.

I loved the dynamic between Cinder Brian and Ella. I loved their banter and their ability to be there when the other needs it most. I’ve always been sketchy about internet relationships, but this is far from the typical scenario. They didn’t meet in a chatroom or through a weird find-an-internet-buddy site. She wrote a review online and Cinder Brian was riled up enough by it to comment and the resulting argument spurred on the continual contact.****MINOR SPOILER****I was a little surprised that Ella never recognizes his voice once they progress to phone conversations. She has seen his films and knows of him as an actor, so I was expecting at least a minor, he sounds vaguely familiar moment. I recognize voices a lot more than faces, especially in films. I’ll hear someone and recognize the voice, even if the face is unfamiliar. I think Ella should have at least questioned it, because I doubt the distortion of a phone would mask it completely****END SPOILER****

What I (surprisingly) loved was the family relationship. Things are far from perfect, but the further into the story you get, the more you realize that there is no easy answer. Daddy dearest did abandon Ella. Step-Mom is clueless, but she is genuinely trying to help. The step-sisters are both anger at her for different reasons. Anastasia and Juliette (the step-sisters) are mean, but they both have their reasons. It’s clear that as much as I want this to wrap up in a fairy tale way, with the step-family just being the bad guys, that’s not how it’s going to happen. Oram does one step better and humanizes everyone. Even when you hate her family, you can’t help but feel the stress she is putting on their lives.

This is the first of Oram’s novels I’ve read and I can truly say I’m desperate for me. When I started this, I was expecting a cute, fluffy Cinderella retelling and we definitely get that, but we also get so much more. This novel was unputdownable (I know, that’s not a word, but it should be). I was hooked from page one and it physically pained me when I had to put it down for real-life things (you know, work, food, bathroom breaks). It has the perfect balance of heartbreaking and heartwarming. It manages to make you laugh and cry in equal amounts. This is now officially my favorite Cinderella retelling and I hope you all love it as much as I did!

****Thank you to Kelly Oram for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review****
