Walk The Edge (Thunder Road #2) by Katie McGarry – I always have to have the latest Katie McGarry novel. I already love this book anyway so there was no reason NOT to get it.
Sugar Skulls by Lisa Mantchev & Glenn Dallas – I adored Mantchev’s Theatre Illumiata series and this sounds amazing. Plus, it’s got a gorgeous cover!
Maybe Not (Maybe #1.5) by Colleen Hoover – Colleen Hoover is more or less and autobuy for me. I’ve been avoiding buying this for a while because while I love her, I think $12 for a 120 page novella is excessive. But for $6 online? Gimme.

SWAG
Swag 4-9-16
I went to the opening weekend for my local drive-in (but soon to be not the ONLY drive-in near me which I’m way too excited about) and they had a table full of these promo posters for Batman Vs Superman. My opinions about the movie aside, I’m a sucker for free swag and posters are one of my favorite things.

That’s what I’ve gotten over the past few weeks! What have you received recently? Let me know in the comments!

Blitz for Starflight by Melissa Landers

Alrighty peoples, today we want to celebrate the release of Starflight by Melissa Landers. First things first, I have a message from Melissa herself below and I’ll put the information about the book below that, k?

Message from Melissa Landers:

Hey there, booklovers!

I’m author Melissa Landers, and I’m thrilled to announce the release of STARFLIGHT, the first in a brand new sci-fi series from Disney-Hyperion. I originally pitched this story to my editor as “Overboard” (one of my favorite romantic comedies) meets “Firefly” (an amazing show that was tragically cancelled after one season). STARFLIGHT follows the misadventures of Solara Brooks, a penniless felon who indentures herself to her high school nemesis, Doran Spaulding, in exchange for passage to a new world. But when Doran’s memory is temporarily erased, Solara convinces him their roles are reversed—that she’s the master and he’s the servant—and leads him onto a renegade spaceship, where intergalactic shenanigans ensue. STARFLIGHT is very different in tone from the Alienated trilogy, but the story is still filled with all the things I love: humor, heart, and adventure.

What do reviewers have to say?

“Get ready for blast-off! Action-packed and utterly addictive, nobody writes like Melissa Landers. A smart, satisfying romance set in a vividly detailed world, Starflight was just plain fun!” –New York Times bestselling author Amie Kaufman

“Teens will be bracing themselves during the swashbuckling action scenes. A great choice for fans of raw sci-fi action, reminiscent of the lawlessness presented in the television series Firefly.” –School Library Journal

“A lively tale of romance, space pirates, conspiracy, and made (as opposed to genetic) families.” –Booklist

If you like your sci-fi adventure served with a side of romance, I hope you’ll pick up a copy of STARFLIGHT today. It’s now available in stores and online.

Magic and Mayhem in Manhattan

Francesca Bellafiore comes from a nice Jewish family — one that happens to have magical powers. Underneath her good-girl exterior, though, she’s a wannabe badass with dreams of becoming a paranormal detective.

Party boy Rafael Muñoz does everything possible to publicly disappoint his high profile father. Privately, it’s a different story. His carefully crafted bad boy reputation masks the fact he’s a master illusionist, forced into solo covert ops. The role is wearing thin and Rafael longs to be part of a team.

When Francesca and Rafael meet, it’s love at first sight… For about five minutes. Rafael is spectacularly attractive—and, Francesca discovers, fully aware of the fact. Rafael knows from experience that girls like Francesca are more trouble than they’re worth.

So it sucks big time when they’re caught in a web of magic, minions, secrets, and enough sexual tension to power NYC. Their only chance to save the city and survive is to team up, trust each other–and maybe even fall in love.
Provided they don’t kill each other first.

Get Real is a romantic comedy, urban fantasy whirlwind with sass, sex, and swoon.

EXCERPT

POV: Francesca
The moon was full. I’d lost my cardigan somewhere in the house but this late in June, the night before the summer solstice, it was warm. The thump of bass and tinkling laughter from the party kept me company, but I was alone until a familiar weight crushed my lap.

The swing jolted sideways.
“Give us a sip,” Devi said, sprawling across me. “I’m parched.”
I half–heartedly shoved her. “There’s this amazing old–school technology called a tap. It pours water to quench your thirst.”

“It’s too crowded in there. And some obnoxious ass is juggling kegs. This does not bode well for the rest of the evening.”
Great. I’d probably end up on healing duty.
Devi slid off me and swung her legs onto my lap, nestling against the green cushions resting along our backs. She held out her hand imperiously.
I handed over my soda. “Any sign of the target? Or his friends?” I asked.
“No sightings yet.” Eli slumped down on my other side. He flicked my knee to get me to move my leg from under his, since he’d sat on it. Then he snatched the bottle from Devi before I could grab it, and took a long swig.

Eli sputtered at the taste of it. “Coke,” he said with the same disgust reserved for “herpes.”
I wiped off my arm with a grimace.

“Where’s Byron?” I asked.
Eli set the bottle down between us. “Last I saw, she was pretending to hostess but really watching the front door like a hawk waiting for her boy toy to show.”

Byron gracefully sat down into the teak chair to my left, placing her own drink on the low table in front of us with a gentle clink of ice. She’d changed from her more casual sundress into dark skinny jeans and a sparkly black top, her hair curled in gentle waves. What a good–looking bunch we were.

“Hardly a hawk,” she said.

“A lady hawk.” Eli leaned forward to inspect the dark liquid.
“Rum and coke,” Byron said, sliding her glass away from him. “And off limits to boys who insult.” I leaned my head on Eli’s shoulder. “This is nice. Who knows how many more moments we’ll have like this for a while?”

Eli slung his arm around me. Devi reached up to take his hand, while Byron swung a foot onto his lap, as we all watched a couple dance in lazy turns on the lawn to the dubstep pounding from the living room.

I was really lucky to have them, these friends who loved me for who I was, pointless boiler aspirations and all. I sighed, all warm and snug.

Then some guy stepped into the back doorway, framed by the soft light over the door and I forgot these people existed. Hip braced against the wood, he lounged all cocky arrogance. He wore dark straight–leg jeans, hanging low on his lean hips, and exposing a glimpse of hard abs under a T–shirt reading More Issues Than Vogue.

I laughed softly, even as my stomach clenched in swoony delight.
I couldn’t tell his eye color but he had black hair, cut short on the sides and longer on top.
He flexed a hand, rubbing it roughly over the top of his head. It left his soft–looking strands all mussed up. Even his fierce scowl didn’t detract from his looks. Though he wasn’t my usual pretty boy type.

The more I watched him from my cover of the shadowed swing, the more his smoldering dark looks made “pretty” kind of boring. “Figo,” I sighed. “Who is that? But don’t—”

Every single pair of my friends’ eyes swung toward him.
“… Stare,” I said.
“Hey.” Byron bounced on the seat at the sight of him. “That means Jones must be here.”

She glanced around.
Eli clamped a hand down on her as she tried to get up. “Play it cool.”

She grumbled but stayed put.

Devi swung her head between the unknown beautiful boy and me. “Do tell. I’m intrigued by any male who gets Frankie so hot and bothered.”

“Am…” I started to protest, but got distracted by the view as he turned around.
My friends snickered.
“Not,” I finished.

“Yeah you ‘am,’” Eli said. “Name him already Byron, so that Frankie may harness his body for unspeakable acts.”

I waved a flustered hand at him. “Shut up.”

Devi half–raised her hand. “Wait. I want her to speak them. The acts.” She took my hand and placed it on Eli’s leg. “Or just point out on Eli where you’d like to touch this guy.”

I snatched my hand back with a long–suffering look. “Who is he?”

Byron lowered her voice. Not like he could hear us. “You must have heard of him. Rafael Muñoz?” Devi’s eyes widened. “That’s Javier’s infamous kid, Rafa?”

I deflated. Only because of his reputation and not at all because he now chatted with a supermodel–gorgeous blonde. “Could he invade her personal space any more?”

I guzzled down the dregs of my Coke.

“Don’t think of Rafa as marriage material, more like ‘for a good time call,’” Byron said.

DESCRIPTION

This final chapter in the fun and steamy New Adult trilogy by Noelle August (authors Veronica Rossi and Lorin Oberweger) features two aspiring musicians who must choose between their careers…and their sizzling attraction for each other.

Playing the occasional club gig just isn’t cutting it for twenty-two-year-old cellist Skyler Canby, who’s trying to support herself and her mother back home in Kentucky. Persuaded by her best friend Beth to accompany her on an audition for the first feature film launched by Blackwood Entertainment, she figures why not? Beth’s a shoe-in for the lead, but maybe Skyler’s newly dyed pink hair will help her stand out enough to score a small speaking part.

Never in her wildest dreams does Skyler imagine she’ll land the lead role or that she’ll have her shoes knocked off her feet by the kiss her audition partner, Grey Blackwood, plants on her—a kiss that feels very real and not at all “acted. ”

After throwing a party that causes thousands of dollars of damage to his older brother’s home, reckless musician Grey Blackwood gets roped into working off his debt on the set of his CEO brother’s newest project. Grey spends his days fetching coffee and doing odd jobs around the studio, but he lives for nights when he performs with his band. He knows if he can stay focused, success as a singer is just around the corner. But that’s tough with a distracting pink-haired girl occupying his every waking thought.

Skyler and Grey have every reason to resist each other. But, like a song neither of them can get out of their minds, they have no choice but to go where the music takes them.

EXCERPT

Good lord in a basket, it’s him all right. Grey. Illuminated by the golden lights coming on along Venice Boulevard. With suds and water sluicing off his ridiculously ripped body, cascading from his massive tattooed biceps, running down his taut muscled abdomen. His swimsuit sags dangerously low, clinging to his sturdy thighs, making, um, everything, pretty evident.

And evidently pretty impressive.

Probably, this would be a good time to actually speak some words, but even in a town full of hot, hot people, this is kind of stratospheric.

“Yep, it’s me.” Grey reaches back to turn off the shower, which breaks the spell, so I can at least avert my gaze like a decent person. Then he rubs a towel vigorously over his gleaming body and tucks it around his waist.

He has a strange look on his face—peevish, embarrassed, and it feels suddenly like we’re intruding on something. Or maybe it’s just me. I think about that moment in my trailer. His fingers on my skin. My wanting and not knowing what to want.

“Uh, so, what are you up to?” I ask in an effort to win the prize for most obvious question ever. “I mean, I can see what you were up to.” Seriously, Sky? “But, uh, were you just in the water? What brings you out here?”

“I’m crashing nearby. At the garage where my band rehearses.”

“Really?” asks Mia. “Why?”
Grey looks from me to Mia and then back to me, weighing something. Maybe whether or not he can trust us. He’s got this hot, coiled energy all the time, like he’s always holding back. Like he’s an animal caged inside a human body.

“Just staying there for a few weeks.”

“Because of your mom?” I ask. It was obvious from their interaction on set that there’s some bad blood there, though compared to my mom, she seems kind and thoughtful, whip-smart and curious without being overbearing. Which makes sense, given her offspring.

Then I remember that Grey’s not really her offspring. He said “stepmother,” and the way he said it really answers my question.

Which is good, because he doesn’t actually answer it. Instead, he gathers up his stuff—surfboard, wetsuit—and gives us a grin. “I gotta head out,” he says, as though nothing’s hanging there between us. He looks away for a second, following the path of a guy in an Obama mask as he weaves his way up the boardwalk on a ribbon-festooned unicycle. “Told some friends I’d hook up with them tonight.”

“Wait,” says Mia. “So, you’re just sleeping in a garage? Like on an air-mattress or something?”

Grey shrugs. “A couch. It’s okay.”

“And taking freezing cold showers out on the beach? That doesn’t sound great, does it, Sky?”

“No, it doesn’t,” I say, but I’m afraid of where she’s going with this.

“Can’t you stay at a hotel or something?”

He shakes his head. “Money’s a little tight right now. I’m giving Adam almost every penny to pay him back for the house, and I don’t really have…” Again, he goes silent, and I can feel, literally, the tension of him wanting to talk, wanting to say more to someone. Needing it.

“Why don’t you come stay at our place?” Mia blurts. We have that in common. The blurting thing. “I mean, I’m just about all moved out, so there’s room.”

Ay, dios. No. No.

But I can’t say anything. I can’t tell my best friend, who knows I’m talking to Brooks, starting to maybe, sort of, think about where that could go, that having Grey in my apartment, so close all the time, is a very dangerous, very bad idea.

Grey shakes his head. “Nah, I appreciate it, but I’m cool here. I promise. Thanks, though.” He takes a few steps toward a squat gray building with weather-beaten shutters and a tiny, shed-like garage in the back. “I’ll see you guys tomorrow.”

“Hang on,” says Mia, pulling me along. She gives me a look, tipping her head in his direction, like she’s tapping me in for the debate. “You’re cool with it, right, Sky?”

“Of course.” Not. In no way. “But it seems like he’s got it under control here. So, if—”

My words disappear, though, because Grey’s pulled up the garage door, the muscles of his broad back and shoulders shifting smoothly as he thrusts the door up along its rusting track.

“See?” he says, pointing to a lumpy white couch sporting what looks like a half-century’s worth of mystery stains—a perfect complement to the funk of beer and weed and sweat potent enough to make my eyes water. “Perfectly fine, right?”

But, like me, he’s lousy at hiding his feelings. Even turned away to shove some empty beer cans into a garbage bag, his body language tells me everything.

He doesn’t want to be here in this musty space, crowded with furniture and audio equipment, the only natural light coming in from the tiny half-moon windows set into the garage door, which faces a dim alleyway.

“You should come stay with us,” I say, surprising the hell out of us both. “I mean, this is…”

“It’s fine,” Grey insists. “I don’t need much, and I’m hardly ever here.”

I think how different he is from Brooks, who says what he means, tells you—without hesitation—what he wants.

“Come on,” says Mia.

“Seriously,” he tells us. “It’s really nice of you to ask, but I’m fine. I can’t afford—”

“I paid up on the place through the end of the lease,” Mia says. “You can just chip in on food and utilities. I’m sure you can manage that, right? It’s only for a few weeks. And you’d be rooming with two awesome, super hot girls. How can you say no to that?”

He looks at me, and I can see he’s worried about the same things I am. Rooming together. Being too close, constantly one second away from making a really dumb choice. He’s young and too reckless for me. And a musician, on top of it all. He’s everything I don’t need sharing my space.

But something tugs at me, makes me put all of those concerns aside. I see it in his smoke-gray eyes, which are so alive, so deep and full of thoughts. Some pain or fear lives there. Something that makes it so hard for him to accept. To take a simple kindness. It’s not just about me but about trusting. Anything.

Seeing that, I can’t let him spend another night in this crappy place. Just…alone.

“You should come home with us,” I say. “It will be…a lot better than this, I promise.”

INTERVIEW

1. This is the third and FINAL novel! Any insight you can provide our aspiring writers on how to approach a final novel in a trilogy?

Lorin: I think Veronica’s the perfect person to comment on this because she’s worked on both a trilogy with a complete arc spread over three novels AND a series with three companion novels.  From my perspective, though, I wanted to make sure readers had some sense of where the protagonists from the other stories (Mia, Ethan, Alison, and Adam) ended up, as well as to show some progression in the world of Boomerang, which focused first on the website and eventually on the expansion into movies.

Veronica: Approach the final novel in a trilogy with plenty of wine and a good sense of humor! Kidding aside, it’s been the most enjoyable book for me to write, twice now. Middle books, however…Not fun.

2. How does Skyler and Grey’s relationship differ from any of those we have seen in the series thus far?

Lorin: For me, one of the ways their relationship differs is that they’re both a bit more raw, a bit less self-assured than Mia, Ethan, Adam, and Alison (though of course, those characters have their vulnerabilities, as well).  Beyond that, they’re also separated more for psychological/emotional reasons than for logistical reasons (e.g., Ethan and Mia were forbidden to date due to company policy). They’re both passionate about the same thing—music—and both figuring out how to juggle life and love and family commitments. I feel like they’re both rougher in some ways than our other characters and also more tender, which makes putting them together really exciting!

Veronica: As the youngest hero we’ve had in the books, Grey brings a visceral quality. It’s just part of his nature. He’s unstudied. Rough, as Lorin says. He says what’s on his mind and feels what he feels, and everybody just needs to deal with it. I loved seeing how that worked with Skyler, who’s this dynamic, sweet, wise girl. I won’t say much more about how they interact, so as to not spoil the fun, but they had mad chemistry. So great together.

3. What does the New Adult genre mean to you? Any favorite authors/books that you’ve been reading?

Lorin: For me, it’s about capturing that really exciting, tumultuous, fraught, complex time when people are making their first real steps into adulthood, into the world of meaningful work, meaningful love and/or sex, adult dynamics with family, etc.  Favorite authors in NA: Too many! Sophie Jordan, Megan Erickson, Colleen Hoover, Abbi Glines. I don’t know if she’s really characterized this way, but I’m going to add Rainbow Rowell to the NA pantheon as well. Always great.

Veronica: All of the above for me, too. And Jennifer Armentrout (J. Lynn) is a favorite, Cora Carmack…the list really does go on. I’m also a huge fan of Sarah Maas, and I think you can make an argument that A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES is NA paranormal fantasy. Also fabulous.

4. Music and film play a big part in this one. What are some of your favorite artists and movies you’d love to share?

Lorin: Music: Right now, I’m listening to X Ambassadors, Jamie XX, Arcade Fire, Grouplove, Blur, Ed Sheeran, Elle King… I’ll stop myself here! Movies: Oh, the agony of picking! Shawshank Redemption; Defending Your Life; Broadcast News; Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind; and, like Beth and Titus in the book, pretty much anything by Richard Linklater or Wes Anderson. Plus Pixar. Inside Out made me cry approximately 2,153 times.

Veronica: I struggle with this question too, because so many of my favorites are going to sound outdated, BUT: GLADIATOR, the BOURNE IDENTITY trilogy, SHINE, THE PRINCESS BRIDE. See? Not a lot of recent films here. I’m more a fan of television series these days. Can’t get enough of OUTLANDER or VIKINGS. I also just binge-watched PARKS AND RECREATION this month. Love that series. And I live with three males so if the television is on, it’s usually on a baseball or football game, which is great with me. Confession: I love sports. And I love books. Gasp! Shocking, right?

5. Choosing between personal career success and love is a major challenge people struggle with every day, millennials especially because of the pressure of success these days. What are some of the issues Skyler and Grey (and even some of the other Boomerang characters!) go through that can help some of the readers realize what’s truly important?

Lorin: What stands out for me is that all the characters are working out how to balance their careers with not only their romantic lives but where they fit into their families, how their families add to, or detract from, their professional and creative desires, and what it means for them to go their own ways, in work and in love. There’s a point in which almost all of them have to get clear of family expectations or legacies and decide who they are and what they love, independent of all that.

Veronica: I think the answer is right there in your question. Each of our characters are trying to figure out what’s important. They’re asking themselves: What matters to me most? How do I want to spend my time? How do I want to start—and shape—my life?

6. In my opinion, BOUNCE reads more of a standalone than the first two in the series! Any intention, or was that the way the book flowed?

Lorin: Just the way the book flowed, though I think we hope they all stand alone pretty well!

Veronica: Perhaps this one feels more standalone because the setting moved away from the BOOMERANG offices a bit more than in the last two novels. We’re mostly on a movie set in this one. And, yeah. It wasn’t planned; it just happened!

7. Did the long distance writing get any easier as each book went on? The writing is so seamless, it boggles my mind there were two brains at the helm of the manuscript!

Lorin: Aw, thanks! And yes, book three was a really fun and seamless experience. As seems to always be the case, book two is always the bear, and I think we’d both say that was the case. But I feel lucky to work with someone as dedicated and brilliant as Veronica. DEFINITELY makes it easy AND inspiring!

Veronica: Thanks, Lorin! And likewise! I felt like we found our groove early with this one. It was a blast to write. And, yes. All Book Twos involve some agony. It’s one of Nature’s Laws.

8. We are tearfully saying goodbye to the Boomerang clan. What will you miss most about these characters, and series?

Lorin: Honestly, I think I’m in denial about this actually BEING the last book. Veronica and I have talked about other characters’ stories, so they’re living on in our imaginations and, who knows, may end up with works of their own someday! I would LOVE to know what kind of dude could make an honest woman of Cookie! 😉

Veronica: Ha-ha. Cookie does deserve her own book, doesn’t she? I know I’ll miss all the main characters, and so many of the secondary characters, too. I love that we write about genuinely good people—who make mistakes, sure—but who are generally trying to do the right thing. No knock against the darker heroes and heroines out there, of course, but these stories have been a welcome source of cheer for me. I believe this world can always use more laughter, heart, and positivity.

9. Dare we ask – any favorites?

Lorin: Cookie! She just cracks me up, and she’s so loyal to Adam. Also love Paolo and the gang from the Boomerang offices, plus Grey, Grey, Grey. Sigh…

Veronica: Grey. Mia. Cookie. Rhett… Geez. Is it fair to say I think I love them all?

MY REVIEW

This book was very bittersweet for me. I have enjoyed this series immensely and am very sad to see it end. That being said, this was one hell of a book to go out on. Grey and Skyler’s story is addicting in that great way this whole series has been. It provides that just one more chapter experience that we all go into novels looking for.

A big part of what makes this series shine is the characters and this is no exception. Skyler and Grey both have this feeling of being confident and vulnerable simultaneously. Skyler is under so much pressure from trying to make ends meet that I don’t see how she can get out of bed in the morning. She not only had the responsibility of supporting herself like everyone else, but she has to constantly send money to help keep her mom afloat. And considering playing her cello a few nights a week doesn’t pay very well, it’s easy to understand why she let Beth push her into trying out for a small role in the film. Once she lands the big role and starts preparing for the role, you really see the vulnerability peek through. Behind her cello, she’s safe. She is confident that she can play whatever she wants because she is practiced at it, but acting is a new thing. She has no confidence in her ability and then she has people giving her so many backhanded compliments about her appearance that it’s easy to see why any confidence she’d had about her appearance fell away. I could just sympathize with her so much and I really enjoyed her character.

Then we have Grey. I love Grey so much. He’s easily one of my top NA males of this year, maybe ever. He’s young and a little reckless, but completely self-aware. It doesn’t escape his notice when he’s being an asshole. He’s been directionless until very recently in his life. He only just discovered his love of singing and his desire to make a carer out of that. You have to hand it to him though because once he set his mind on it, he started single-handedly pursuing it. He works hard and throws himself into making music with a passion that I don’t think I’ve ever experience for anything other than reading. But Grey’s sweetness and vulnerability are what really stole my heart.

This book does several things right, beyond the great writing and dialogue and character development and all that normal stuff. It has characters that act like adults, thinking about the consequences of their actions in multiple situations. There is a bit of a love triangle, but I like that all parties involved acted like adults. The minute things change, Sky steps up and is honest about it. She doesn’t play games or try to excuse her behavior because she’s in love that that should the ultimate excuse for idiotic actions. I also love the level of smut you get here. I’m pretty sure I commented on it in my review of Boomerang, but I feel like these have the perfect level of smut. I feel like New Adult is becoming synopsis with erotica when it comes to smut levels and that’s not necessarily a good thing. I’m obviously looking for more than we get in Young Adult and there are moments when I want all out descriptions, but I just feel like this straddles that line perfectly.

My only complaint is a small, trivial one. They make that comment that I’ve come to dread in anything associated with romance. The varied comments on how big his dick is has become as annoying to me as seeing that “the breath I didn’t know I was holding” line. I get it, to a certain extent. This is a fantasy and that is a general fantasy, but it’s getting old really quickly. I won’t go on an all out-rant, but I will say that if I ever come across a romance novel where they give the guy a gloriously average size penis, I might give it 5 stars on principle alone!

I can’t say I loved this quite as much as Boomerang, but it is a very close second. I actually like Grey just a smidge better than Ethan…I think…maybe… Mainly I think Boomerang won my heart for this series because it introduced the world in such a fantastic way, so it has to remain #1. This, though, comes very (very) close to knocking it out of that spot, which should speak volumes. How often do the final book in series’ really come close to being better than the start?

DESCRIPTION

Posers gonna pose

I am a man who had nothing, but found everything.

I’ll never go back to nothing ever again.

I vowed to protect her, and that’s exactly what I’m gonna do.

The pictures I stumbled upon haunt me still, the secret I shoulder is heavy.

They say secrets put distance between two people, but the truth is far more destructive than keeping it will ever be.

I won’t ever tell. She can’t ever know.

When I look in the mirror my reflection is of who I’m afraid I’ll become and not the man I am.

It makes me feel like a poser, no better than all the others pretending to be exactly who they aren’t.

How does a man keep it together when everything is unraveling right here in his hands?

I didn’t start any of this.

I never asked for it.

But it came knocking at my door.

When secrets and threats knock, I don’t hide.

I open the door.

Because the best way to take down a poser is to be one.

DESCRIPTION

It’s all about the #Selfie.

She was the one girl I never wanted.

Until I had her.

One night.

One mistake.

Something we both wanted to forget.

I got rid of the proof. The one piece of evidence that could remind us both.

At least, I thought I did.

When it shows up on the school Buzzfeed, rumors fly. Friendships are tested and the feels get real.

I don’t do relationships. I don’t open my heart.

Especially for a girl everyone knows I hate.

What happens during spring break, stays in spring break.

Until it follows you home.

EXCERPT

I didn’t think. I just reacted.

I leapt over the railing with ease. The distance down and the uneven sand I would be landing on didn’t even cross my mind.

It didn’t matter.

I landed like a cat, no trouble at all, and the second my feet hit the sand, I moved forward. Ivy was almost beneath the deck, but not quite. Her back was to me and she was sitting up, hunched forward over part of herself.

She was muttering some pretty damn colorful curse words beneath her breath, and my face split into a smile. “Another angry crab attack you?”

She stiffened and looked over her shoulder. Long blond hair cascaded down her back and partially over her shoulder, creating a waterfall around her.

God, she was beautiful.

Wait. No. No, she wasn’t.

I cleared my throat.

“Braeden?” She glanced up, surprised. “Did you jump down here?”

“Well, you screamed like you might be dying,” I quipped.

“Hardly.” She tried to roll her eyes, but it turned into a grimace. “I need a Band-Aid,” she said pathetically.

I bit back a smile and crouched down beside her. “Let me see.”

She leaned back a little so her body wasn’t blocking my view. The movement brought her closer against me, and the scent of cinnamon wrapped around me. My stomach muscles tightened and I jerked slightly. There was no way she could have noticed, but her head tilted back and her eyes found mine.

We stared at each other for the span of a few heartbeats, neither of us moving or saying a word until someone called down from above, wanting to know if we were okay.

I blinked, bringing myself back from the edge—the edge I always seemed perched on around her—and motioned for her to show me what was wrong.

She lifted her foot into her lap, and I looked down.

I heard myself mutter something, but I was back to not thinking again.

She had the cap of a beer bottle sticking out of the bottom of her foot. Blood oozed out around it and dripped into the sand.

I cradled her foot in my hand and gently stroked my thumb along her heel. A shudder moved through her, and I glanced up.

“Hurts, huh?” I murmured.

She blinked. “Uh…” She blinked again. “Yeah.”

Using one hand, I reached around to the base of my neck and pulled my T-shirt up over my head. I didn’t say anything when I reached for her again, and without any warning, I yanked the cap free.

Her breath hissed between her teeth and she smacked my arm.

“Hey!” I snapped.

“That hurt!” she yelled, but it came out more like a whimper.

I tossed the cap over my shoulder and glanced back down. Fresh blood welled. “It’s over now,” I said gently and used my shirt to wrap around her foot.

Once the shirt was in place, I pressed her foot between my hands, applying a little pressure.

Really, I just wasn’t ready to let go.

“Braeden?” Her voice caressed me. Being down here mostly concealed by the deck in the cool sand and low lighting brought back last night. It reminded me of the undeniable electricity between us.

I thought for sure it would be gone.

It was still there.

Guest Post from Julie Cross!!!!

You guys, I have something really special for you today! Julie Cross was stopped by for a guest posts on tips for dating a model to promote Halfway Perfect, her newest novel (co-written with male model Mark Perini). Before we get to the goodies, I just wanted to say that you guys definitely want to check this novel out. It’s smart and funny and completely heartwarming. If any of you live in NYC, you should stop by Books Of Wonder bookstore on Friday, May 8, between 6 PM and 8 PM because both Mark and Julie will be there signing copies! If you get to go, I’m incredibly jealous because I live far from NYC and even if I was considering skipping work Friday and making the crazy drive, my husband has to commandeer the car to go in the exact opposite direction to attend his sisters wedding. X_X But I will be there in spirit! Anyway, without further ado, I give you JULIE CROSS!

GUEST POST: THE DO’S AND DON’TS OF DATING A MODEL BY JULIE CROSS

Well, unlike Mark, I’ve never actually dated a model. And I’m not even sure I’ve met one in person (not even Mark), so I can only give this list according to Eve, our heroine, who pursues dating a model, despite telling herself it’s a bad, bad idea.

  • Don’t – Show up at his underwear shoot for Calvin Klein, polka dot banana hammocks are not even a little bit sexy
  • Do – Make friends with his fake girlfriend, it will make dating life so much easier for both of you
  • Don’t – Make him late for a call time. Punctuality failure means “difficult talent” and less work
  • Do – Consult him before traveling, it’s likely he’s been where you’re going and can offer great advice
  • Don’t – Come at him with a pin or sewing needle, it’s likely he’s developed a phobia and this might cause a panic attack
  • Do – prepare yourself for adventure and fun, possibly physical activity (well, not that! Okay maybe that…)
  • Don’t – Assume posing for pictures is his thing. It’s work. Ask him what his thing is, what he’s interested in, I guarantee you’ll be surprised
  • Do – Invite him to Thanksgiving dinner with your professor. It’s likely he’s far from home and might enjoy company for the holiday
  • Don’t – Challenge him to a staring contest. He’s trained at professional expressions and keeping a straight face. You will lose
  • Do – Find a private, camera free place to kiss him for the first time (dorm rooms are great) because everyone knows real love happens off camera and away from watchful eyes
