My fitness log – Week 19

Just one run this week. This week is proof that I should never ask advice from my husband on running. He’s basic answer? Don’t go! He loves me as is, which is awesome, but not so great when I need motivation to get off my ass. I had *planned* on running both Saturday and Sunday, but when running behind schedule on Saturday, my husband suggested I just skip it. I agreed ‘cuz, you know, I’m lazy and shit. But I did go Sunday morning. Just a simple 10 minute run, 3 minute walk, and second 10 minute run. Again, you’d think that running 10 minutes would be cake after running 20 minutes, but it just isn’t so. I made it through both runs, but it was not easy by any means.

I am getting a little concerned about my left hip. After the 20 minute run, it hurt the next few days. Not in a “oh god, I can’t move” way, just a pretty solid ache. Then it dulled down a bit. I made a point not to run at all while it was extra sore because the #1 piece of advice I read online was just to rest for injuries and ice the inflammation. It didn’t completely go away before my last run, but it got to the point it was only sore if I moved a certain way, so I figured it was safe to go again. While running on Sunday, my left hip felt fine, but my right hip hurt WHILE I was running. Like, sharp, stabb-y pains. They didn’t last long, both probably about half way through each ten minute session, it hurt for 30 – 60 seconds. Then it went away. After the run? More left hip aches. Nothing seriously intense, just general soreness. Writing this, days later, it’s still sore. Again, not life-alteringly painful, just a dull ache that hasn’t ceased like I expected it to. I have no health insurance, so a doctor’s visit isn’t an option.

I’m just sorta weighing my decision. I don’t want to stop training to run. Even though I don’t love the actual running bit, I like the sense of accomplishment and just the general getting out of the house thing. I love the excuse to listen to an extra half hour of my audiobook. But I don’t want to aggravate it either. I don’t want it to get to the point that it’s intolerable. I don’t know. I’m going to just think on it some more. Maybe I should skip a whole week? Give it more time to heal? Buying new shoes is also a big recommendation. Not just go to the store and pick myself a new pair, but go to a running store and have them assess my run and help me pick a good pair for my running stride. I know the pain isn’t cause by worn out shoes because the ones I have are used exclusively for running and they still have quite a bit of cushion. Whatever. I’ll see how I feel tomorrow morning and go from there!

Book Tag Thursday – Literary Dinner Party

Today I’ll be doing the Literary Dinner Party book tag. This tag was created by Renee at NEHOMAS2 and you can see her original video here. If any bloggers out there want to join me, feel free to leave a link to you’re post in the comments, I’d love to see them. Or for anyone else out there who doesn’t have a blog, feel free to leave some of you’re answers in the comments so I’ll feel a little less alone.

THE RULES: you must invite 11 guests, so there is a total party of 12 including yourself. The people I’d invite are below.
1. One character who can cook/likes to cook
The first person who comes to mind is Micah Foster from The Art Of Lainey by Paula Stokes. I don’t know if the boy can cook normal food, but he can bake and I could definitely tolerate a dinner of baked goods alone!

2. One character who has money to fund the party
Prince Rhy from A Gathering Of Shadows by V E Schwab would be my pick. He’s a Prince and loaded and loves a good party.

3. One character who might cause a scene
Harriet Manners from Geek Girl by Holly Smale could definitely accomplish that. She’d spout off a random fact about the food we’re eating or the location and suddenly she’s embarrassed and the entire party is trying to coax her out from underneath the table. Either that or she’ll trip over her own feet knocking down a line of waiters with their arms full. Either way, it’ll get everyone’s attention!

4. One character who is funny/amusing
That would be Captain Carswell Thorn from The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. He’s funny and quirky and dashingly handsome. Yes please!

5. One character who is super social/popular
I’ll take Tia from Biggest Flirts. She’s just the shinning light of the group!

6. One villian
This took me WWWAAAYYYY too long to come up with an answer for this. I ended up with President Snow from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I feel like he’d have excellent table manners and generally be a good dinner guest!

7. One couple – doesn’t have to be romantic
David and Megan from Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson are the first couple that came to mind. One because they are so cute together. Two because David could sit in between Megan and Harriet from Geek Girl so they can geek-out together on things no one else would understand. Three because Megan is a badass I just wanna know more about her.

8. One hero/heroine
Veronica Mars from The Thousand Dollar Tan Line by Rob Thomas & Jennifer Graham. She’d definitely have some interesting stories to tell!

9. One underappreciated character
I’d invite Dorian from Throne Of Glass by Sarah J Maas. I feel like the further the series goes on, the more we take Dorian for granted. The poor guy could really use a night out on the town.

10. One character of your own choosing
I’ve been trying really hard not to repeat series or authors here, but I’m going to give in on this last question. I would invite Delilah Bard from A Darker Shade Of Magic by V E Schwab. I’m a little obsessed with her and her piratey ways and I’d use any excuse to get a little more of her story. Besides, it might be fun watching her try to rob the other guests and I’d like to listen to the banter between her and Rhy.

That’s it! Who would you invite? Let me know in the comments!

Review for Girl Against The Universe by Paula Stokes

Girl Against The Universe by Paul Stokes

TITLE: Girl Against The Universe
AUTHOR: Paula Stokes
PUBLICATION DATE: May 17, 2016
PUBLISHER: Harper Teen
PAGES: 400 pages
FORMAT: E-ARC
SOURCE: Publisher via Edelweiss
RATING: 5 bows

Maguire is bad luck.

No matter how many charms she buys off the internet or good luck rituals she performs each morning, horrible things happen when Maguire is around. Like that time the rollercoaster jumped off its tracks. Or the time the house next door caught on fire. Or that time her brother, father, and uncle were all killed in a car crash—and Maguire walked away with barely a scratch.

It’s safest for Maguire to hide out in her room, where she can cause less damage and avoid meeting new people who she could hurt. But then she meets Jordy, an aspiring tennis star. Jordy is confident, talented, and lucky, and he’s convinced he can help Maguire break her unlucky streak. Maguire knows that the best thing she can do for Jordy is to stay away. But it turns out staying away is harder than she thought.

From author Paula Stokes comes a funny and poignant novel about accepting the past, embracing the future, and learning to make your own luck.

You know how there are books that you are desperate to read? Books you’d sell you’re first born child for? This was that book for me. This was the one book slated for release this year that I was most looking forward to. One of the perks for being on the Liars Inc street team was getting to read a small excerpt from this midway through last year. From that point on, this was all I really wanted to read. I know this will sound like bullshit, but that little excerpt put me in a book hangover. I would move on and read other things because I couldn’t just sit and pine over a book that wasn’t even finished yet, but if my mind wondered at all, it went right back to this story. Why wasn’t I reading that story about the bad luck? OH, RIGHT! It’s not out yet. When it was uploaded onto Edelweiss, I promptly downloaded it and devoured it. And then avoided writing this review because words are hard. How do I review a book I loved so intensely? Well, here’s my best attempt!

I sympathized with Maguire almost immediately. It’s easy to see why she believed she was bad luck for everyone around her. With so many bad things that have happened in her past, her belief becomes easy to understand. Even though I’m a relatively logical person who doesn’t necessarily believe in luck, I could completely see where she was coming from. It was more of the fact that she always came out unscathed than anything that really seemed to fuel this notion of bad luck. She just wants to keep everyone around her safe and the easiest way to do that is to refuse to interact with the outside world as much as possible.

This could have easily been a light-hearted novel that doesn’t delve too deep into anything substantial. I would have been fine with reading that, but Paula gives us so much more than that. She goes so much deeper than just a silly girl’s notion that she is bad luck. Maguire has real psychological problems that have to be addressed and dealt with. Maguire’s sessions with her therapist were what hooked me into this story so many months ago and it’s still what stays with me. Watching Maguire work through her problems is both hopeful and heartbreaking. There are so many simple tasks that it takes all her self-control to face. I applaud her for all the work she put in. Recovery from psychological disorders is not easy and it’s something to always be admired.

Then you have the romance, which is the perfect balance of sweet, ansty, and swoony. Jordy’s whole first interaction with Maguire had me shipping them. The way he tries to help her and encourages her just had me melting into a swoony puddle.

Basically, I loved this novel. Love does not even seem like a strong enough word, but it’s all I’ve got. I did’t think Stokes could do better than The Art Of Lainey. I adored that novel, but this one is even better. This novel makes me want to re-read it over and over again. Considering that I very rarely ever re-read anything, that should say it all!

****Thank you to Harper Teen for providing me with an eARC via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review****

About THE PROBLEM WITH FOREVER:

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout comes a riveting new story about friendship, survival, and finding your voice.

For some people, silence is a weapon.

For Mallory “Mouse” Dodge, it’s a shield.

Growing up, she learned that the best way to survive was to say nothing. And even though it’s been four years since her nightmare ended, she’s beginning to worry that the fear that holds her back will last a lifetime.

Now, after years of homeschooling with loving adoptive parents, Mallory must face a new milestone—spending her senior year at public high school. But of all the terrifying and exhilarating scenarios she’s imagined, there’s one she never dreamed of—that she’d run into Rider Stark, the friend and protector she hasn’t seen since childhood, on her very first day.

It doesn’t take long for Mallory to realize that the connection she shared with Rider never really faded. Yet the deeper their bond grows, the more it becomes apparent that she’s not the only one grappling with lingering scars from the past. And as she watches Rider’s life spiral out of control, Mallory must make a choice between staying silent and speaking out—for the people she loves, the life she wants, and the truths that need to be heard.

EXCERPT:

Prologue

Dusty, empty shoe boxes, stacked taller and wider than her slim body, wobbled as she pressed her back against them, tucking her bony knees into her chest.

              Breathe. Just Breathe. Breathe.

Wedged in the back of the dingy closet, she didn’t dare make a sound as she sucked her lower lip between her teeth. Focusing on forcing every grimy breath into her lungs, she felt tears well in her eyes.

Oh gosh, she’d made such a big mistake, and Miss Becky was right. She was a bad girl.

She’d reached for the dirty and stained cookie jar earlier, the one shaped like a teddy bear that hid cookies that tasted funny. She wasn’t supposed to get cookies or any food by herself, but she’d just been so hungry that her tummy hurt, and Miss Becky was sick again, napping on the couch. She hadn’t meant to knock the ashtray off the counter, shattering it into tiny pieces. Some were shaped like icicles that clung to the roof during the winter. Others were no bigger than chips.

All she’d wanted was a cookie.

Her slender shoulders jerked at the sound of the all cracking on the other side of the closet. She bit down harder on her lip. A metallic taste burst into her mouth. Tomorrow there would be a hold the size of Mr. Henry’s big hand in the plaster, and Miss Becky would cry and she’d get sick again.

The soft creak of the closet door was like a crack of thunder to her ears.

              Oh no, no, no…

He wasn’t supposed to find her in here. This was her safe place whenever Mr. Henry was angry or when he—

She tensed, eyes peeling wide as a body taller and broader than hers slipped inside and then knelt in front of her. In the dark, she couldn’t make out much of his features, but she knew in her belly and her chest who it was.

              “I’m sorry,” she gasped.

“I know.” A hand settled on her shoulder, the weight reassuring. He was the only person she felt okay with when he touched her. “I need you to stay in here, ‘kay?”

Miss Becky had said once that he was only six months older than her six years, but he always seemed so much bigger, older than her, because in her eyes, he took up her entire world.

              She nodded.

“Don’t come out,” he said, and then he pressed into her hands the redheaded doll she’d dropped in the kitchen after she broke the ashtray and rushed into the closet. Too frightened to retrieve her, she’d left Velvet where she had fallen, and she’d been so upset because the doll had been a gift from him many, many months before. She had no idea how he’d gotten Velvet, but one day he’d simply shown up with her, and she was hers, only hers.

“You stay in here. No matter what.”

Holding the doll close, clenched between her knees and chest, she nodded again.

He shifted, stiffening as an angry shout rattled the walls around them. It was her name that dripped ice down her spine; her name that was shouted so furiously.

A small whimper parted her lips and she whispered, “I just wanted a cookie.”

“It’s okay. Remember? I promised I’d keep you safe forever. Just don’t make a sound.” He squeezed her shoulder. “Just stay quiet, and when I…when I get back, I’ll read to you, ‘kay? All about the stupid rabbit.”

All she could do was nod again, because there had been times when she hadn’t stayed quiet and she’d never forgotten those consequences. But if she stayed quiet, she knew what was coming. He wouldn’t be able to read to her tonight. Tomorrow he would miss school and he wouldn’t be okay even though he would tell her he was.

He lingered for a moment and then he eased out of the closet. The bedroom door shut with a smack, and she lifted the doll, pressing her tearstained face into it. A button on Velvet’s chest poked at her cheek.

              Don’t make a sound.

              Mr. Henry started to yell.

              Don’t make a sound.

              Footsteps punched down the hall.

              Don’t make a sound.

Flesh smacked. Something hit the floor, and Miss Becky must have been feeling better, because she was suddenly shouting, but in the closet the only sound that mattered was the fleshy whack that came over and over. She opened her mouth, screaming silently into the doll.

              Don’t make a sound.

MY REVIEW:

I liked Mallory almost immediately.  It’s impossible not to sympathize with her.  The poor girl has been through hell and even though she’s escaped it now, she bares serious scars from that past.  She has issues speaking and dealing with people in general.  But what I really loved was seeing her push herself.  It would have been so easy to box herself into this woe-is-me category.  Oh, I had a very difficult childhood and now I just can’t overcome it could have easily been her motto.  But she doesn’t do that.  She pushes herself to improve.  She pushes herself to heal and to do the things that scare her.  She’s so strong even when she thinks she’s weak and I admire her so much for that.

Then we have Rider, Mallory’s counterpart in the horrid past.  He was her protector and that scene when they reconnect at school was priceless and everything you could have asked for.  I wasn’t 100% a fan of him for the entire story, but he was an interesting character to watch.

This novel is why I still read YA contemporaries.  It’s smart and thoughtful.  It’s just as much about Mallory’s road to push herself to improve and get better as it is her romance with Rider.  And I could expect nothing less from Jennifer L Armentrout.  She knows how to write a story, there is no questioning that.  She can flesh out a character and make you hurt for them in a single chapter and she makes no apologize about it.

There is one part that I still haven’t made my mind up about.  There is a death contained within these pages.  A death that just cut me to the quick.  A death that just surprised the hell out of me.  I typically knock off star ratings for deaths.  I hate character death, but I can’t seem to bring myself to do it here.  I just enjoyed this story too much to give it less than a full five star rating.  That should tell you all you need to know!

Book Tag Thursday – Intimidating TBR Book Tag

Today I’ll be doing the Intimidating TBR book tag. I’m honestly not sure who created this tag. Most bloggers I’ve seen do this tag credit the creation of this tag to Lindsey Rey, but if she did, the original video has been set to private. If any bloggers out there want to join me, feel free to leave a link to you’re post in the comments, I’d love to see them. Or for anyone else out there who doesn’t have a blog, feel free to leave some of you’re answers in the comments so I’ll feel a little less alone.

1. What book have you been unable to finish?
Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows by J K Rowling
I’ve been listening to the audiobook with my husband and we seem to have come to a screeching halt. On one hand, I know I need to finish the Harry Potter series. I know I do. I have a Harry Potter tattoo and I’m just a huge fan of the Potter world in general, but I’m also not ready for it to be over. I mean, I know I can re-read the series again and again, but it’s just not the same as experiencing the story for the first time. Also, we’ve reading the part where characters I care about are going to die and I’m not emotionally prepared for all the feels that is going to bring.

2. What book have you yet to read because you just haven’t had the time?
Opal by Jennifer L Armentrout
Opal by Jennifer L Armentrout. I love JLA’s Lux series. I love Katy and Daemon’s dynamic and just the world in general. But I know the minute I read this, I’m going to need to finish out the rest of the series and I just don’t have the time to commit to 3 more books, plus Oblivion. I’ll get to it one day, but I just don’t know when.

3. What book have you yet to read because it’s a sequel?
Resonance by Erica O'Rourke
Resonance by Erica O’Rourke. I LOVED Dissonance. I adored everything about it. I was hooked from the first page and I couldn’t put it down. It ended in a cliffhanger and I was desperate for book 2, but now I have book 2 and am very hesitant. What if it doesn’t live up to the awesomeness of Dissonance? What if it ends terribly? What if I hate it?

4. What book have you yet to read because it’s brand new?
Soldier by Julie Kagawa
Okay, so I really liked Talon and I LOVED Rogue, but I haven’t gotten around to reading this yet because it’s only been out for a few weeks. I’m also a little nervous because Julie is known for her cliffhangers and I don’t wanna wait so long for the next installment, but I definitely need to read this. Preferably in audio form because it’s narrated by MacLeod Andrews, at least in part, and I adore him.

5. What book have you yet to read because you read a book by the same author and didn’t enjoy it?
Dreams Of Gods & Starlight by Laini Taylor
I know this is borderline blasphemous to say to fantasy fans, but I did not enjoy Days Of Blood & Starlight very much. I gave it a very generous 4 star rating, but honestly, it was a struggle to get through. As much as I loved Daughter Of Smoke & Bone, I can’t seem to bring myself to finish the trilogy because I don’t want another experience like DOBAS.

6. What book have you yet to read because you’re just not in the mood for it?
Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover
All the Colleen Hoover books. I’ve read the entire Slammed series and the entire Losing Hope series, but that’s it. I haven’t read Maybe Someday, though I love the soundtrack for it. I haven’t read Ugly Love. I haven’t read Confess. I haven’t read November 9. I haven’t read Never Never Part 3. I need to. I love Colleen Hoover. I love her books and her writing style. But contemporary new adult romances have seriously been irritating me lately and I don’t want to soil Colleen’s work with my bad mood.

7. What book have you yet to read because it’s humongous?
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. Everyone loves this book and the show, but it’s so huge! I even have the gorgeous hardcover edition, but it’s sssssooo big that I just haven’t been able to bring myself to pick it up.

8. What book have you yet to read because it was a cover buy that turned out to have poor reviews?
Map Of Time by Felix J Palma
Gorgeous cover, interesting summary, but mixed reviews.

9. What is the most intimidating book in your TBR pile?
A Court Of Mist & Fury by Sarah J Maas
I know this probably could go under every question, but I put it here because it just intimidates the fuck out of me. I’m not overly excited about the love triangle direction this seems to be leaning towards. I really enjoyed ACOTAR, but this one scars me.

That’s it! These are the books on my TBR that intimidate me the most! What’s the most intimidating book on your TBR? Let me know in the comments!

My fitness log – Week 18

Okay, so I’ve only ran once since my last post. It was actually on the day my last post went live, last Wednesday. It was surprisingly difficult. You’d think after running 20 without stopping that running for a few 5 minute intervals would be easy, no? But it wasn’t. This week would was a 5 minute run, 3 minute walk, 8 minute run, 3 minute walk, and then a final 5 minute run. It should have been cake. But it wasn’t. I was easily winded in the first running interval and I almost stopped in the 8 minute bit.

I didn’t go over the weekend because my left hip is sore. I’m honestly not sure if it’s just my body being cranky for a solid 20 minute run out of nowhere or if it’s an injury because that happens, but the best advice was to wait it out. No running until it stops hurting because otherwise you could irritate the injury. So hopefully I’ll get back on the wagon this weekend, but we’ll see!

May 2016 TBR

Okay, so I’ve never done a TBR type post before, but I’ve seen a bunch of people do it and I think planning might help with keeping me on track for my reading goals. Hopefully I’ll get the hang of it sooner or later, but for now, I’m gonna list the books I definitely plan on reading this month with basic details. I won’t list the books I’m on the fence about ’cause I’d like to leave a little wiggle room!

Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows by J K Rowling

TITLE: Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows
SERIES: Harry Potter #7
AUTHOR: J K Rowling
NARRATOR: Jim Dale
PUBLICATION DATE: July 21, 2007
PUBLISHER: Arthur A. Levine Books
LENGTH: 21 hours 36 minutes
FORMAT: Audiobook
SOURCE: Purchased

Reason: I’ve been listening to this audiobook with my husband and I’ve been dragging my feet because I’ve gotten to the part where people are going to start dying off and I’M NOT PREPARED. But I need to finish this book and complete the series. I have a Harry Potter tattoo for fuck’s sake, I need to be able to honestly say I’ve read the full series.

Summary from GoodReads:

Harry is waiting in Privet Drive. The Order of the Phoenix is coming to escort him safely away without Voldemort and his supporters knowing – if they can. But what will Harry do then? How can he fulfil the momentous and seemingly impossible task that Professor Dumbledore has left him?

This Is My Brain On Boys by Sarah Strohmeyer

TITLE: This Is My Brain On Boys
AUTHOR: Sarah Strohmeyer
PUBLICATION DATE: March 10, 2016
PUBLISHER: Balzer + Bray
LENGTH: 352 pages
FORMAT: eARC
SOURCE: Review copy via Edelweiss

Reason: I’ve got an eARC and even though I really doubt my ability to get a review up in the release week, I should at least have it READ in that time frame. Beyond that, this is sounds like a cutesy contemporary YA that I’ll love. Despite the fact that I didn’t love The Secrets Of Lily Graves, I want to give Sarah another shot.

Summary from GoodReads:

Addie Emerson doesn’t believe in love, at least for herself. A straightlaced, brilliant girl, she’s more interested in getting an A than falling in love. But Addie is determined to prove the science of love—because Addie Emerson does believe in science.

Science tells her that “love” is nothing more than the brain’s state under the influence of certain chemicals. And by artificially stimulating those chemicals, the brain can totally be tricked into falling in love. So Addie decides to apply that knowledge—and make her classmates fall in love—to win the coveted Athenian Award for Science in her elite private school. One way to speed up the process—adrenaline—she’ll put her classmates in dangerous, high-risk situations . . . and research the fallout.

But a mysterious new guy keeps messing with her plans. And she kind of can’t stop thinking about his gorgeous brown eyes. With backstabbing competitors—including her former lab partner, the preppy, wealthier-than-thou Dex—and more than one pair of star-crossed lovers—can Addie manage to salvage her experiment and win the Athenian? And what happens if she does the unthinkable—and falls in love?

With Malice by Eileen Cook

TITLE: With Malice
AUTHOR: Eileen Cook
PUBLICATION DATE: June 7, 2016
PUBLISHER: HMH Books for Young Readers
LENGTH: 320 pages
FORMAT: eARC
SOURCE: Review copy via Edelweiss

Reason: One of my many goals this year is to get better at reading the eARC’s before their release date. I used to be very good at that and somewhere along the way, I fell off the wagon. This comes out next month and I want to be prepared for that. Beyond that, I loved Eileen’s previous novel, Remember and I really enjoyed Getting Revenge On Lauren Wood, so I’m sure this will be great too!

Summary from GoodReads:

A read about a teenage girl who wakes up in a hospital bed and cannot remember the last six weeks of her life, including the accident that killed her best friend–only what if the accident wasn’t an accident?

Eighteen-year-old Jill Charron wakes up in a hospital room, leg in a cast, stitches in her face and a big blank canvas where the last 6 weeks should be. She comes to discover she was involved in a fatal accident while on a school trip in Italy three days previous but was jetted home by her affluent father in order to receive quality care. Care that includes a lawyer. And a press team. Because maybe the accident…wasn’t an accident. Wondering not just what happened but what she did, Jill tries to piece together the events of the past six weeks before she loses her thin hold on her once-perfect life.

The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson

TITLE: The Unexpected Everything
AUTHOR: Morgan Matson
NARRATOR: Bailey Carr
PUBLICATION DATE: May 3, 2016
PUBLISHER: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
LENGTH: 16 hours 43 minutes
FORMAT: Audiobook
SOURCE: Review copy via Audible

Reason: Cutesy contemporary YA is what I’ve really want itching to read since I’ve burnt myself out on contemporary romances and New Adults. Also, everyone seems to love Morgan Matson, but I wasn’t overly impressed with Second Chance Summer. This is my attempt to give her a second chance.

Summary from GoodReads:

Andie had it all planned out.

When you are a politician’s daughter who’s pretty much raised yourself, you learn everything can be planned or spun, or both. Especially your future.

Important internship? Check.

Amazing friends? Check.

Guys? Check (as long as we’re talking no more than three weeks).

But that was before the scandal. Before having to be in the same house with her dad. Before walking an insane number of dogs. That was before Clark and those few months that might change her whole life.

Because here’s the thing—if everything’s planned out, you can never find the unexpected.

And where’s the fun in that?

My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, & Jodi Meadows

TITLE: My Lady Jane
AUTHOR: Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, & Jodi Meadows
PUBLICATION DATE: June 7, 2016
PUBLISHER: HarperTeen
LENGTH: 512 pages
FORMAT: eARC
SOURCE: Review copy via Edelweiss

Reason: This sounds hilarious and I’m always on the look out for more hilarity.

Summary from GoodReads:

For fans of The Princess Bride comes the comical, fantastical, romantical, (not) entirely true story of Lady Jane Grey.

Lady Jane Grey, sixteen, is about to be married to a total stranger—and caught up in an insidious plot to rob her cousin, King Edward, of his throne. But that’s the least of Jane’s problems. She’s about to become Queen of England. Like that could go wrong.

Vicarious by Paula Stokes

TITLE: Vicarious
SERIES: Vicarious #1
AUTHOR: Paula stokes
PUBLICATION DATE: August 16, 2016
PUBLISHER: Tor Teen
LENGTH: 336 Pages
FORMAT: eARC
SOURCE: Author
Reason: Ummmm….because Paula is awesome? I love all of Paula’s previous work. Seriously, Girl Against The Universe is amazing and I’m not sure other contemporary YA’s will ever measure up. I’ve also been a bit of a reading funk and I’m hoping a dose of Paula will help with that.

Summary from GoodReads:

Winter Kim and her sister, Rose, have always been inseparable. Together, the two of them survived growing up in a Korean orphanage and being trafficked into the United States.

Now they work as digital stunt girls for Rose’s ex-boyfriend, Gideon, engaging in dangerous and enticing activities while recording their neural impulses for his Vicarious Sensory Experiences, or ViSEs. Whether it’s bungee jumping, shark diving, or grinding up against celebrities at the city’s hottest dance clubs, Gideon can make it happen for you, for a price.

When Rose disappears and a ViSE recording of her murder is delivered to Gideon, Winter won’t rest until she finds her sister’s killer. But when the clues she uncovers conflict with the neural recordings her sister made, Winter isn’t sure what to believe. To find out what happened to Rose, she’ll have to untangle what’s real from what only seems real, risking her life in the process.

That’s it! I hope to read more books than just these six books, but these are the ones I’m for sure about in the month of May! What are you planning on reading this month? Let me know in the comments!
